Compass Minerals Canada Corp. is seeking a Senior Mine Engineer for our Goderich underground salt mine in Ontario. Reports to the Chief Mine Engineer and works with Engineering, Production and Maintenance teams to drive mine projects and continuous improvement.

Starting base salary ranges from $100,000 to $125,000 CAD per year; relocation assistance is available. Overtime and a 24/7 operation are possible; candidate must be able to work underground on-site.

Qualifications

• This role requires an accredited degree in Mining Engineering.
• 7+ years mining engineering or mine supervisory experience preferred.
• Ability to obtain Ontario PE is required.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office is required.
• AutoCAD, MS Project, CMMS systems are highly desirable.
• Other mining related software experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Develop and update long-term and short-term mine plans with the Chief Engineer.
• Conduct mine surveys and maintain up-to-date working points in development areas.
• Conduct ventilation surveys and optimize the ventilation system.
• Maintain and optimize ground control with Rock Mechanics.
• Develop budgetary models and production cost forecasts.
• Play a key role in mine risk management and mitigation planning.
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives in mine processes.
• Investigate opportunities to reduce mining costs and improve efficiency.
• Oversee capital projects and ensure schedule and budget adherence.
• Prepare and manage contracts and installation strategies.

We are currently hiring a Senior Mine Engineer to join the team at our underground salt mine in Goderich, Ontario. This is no a fly in/fly out location.

Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products. Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.

How will you contribute to the team?

This position functions within a team of other professionals, and reports directly to the Chief Mine Engineer, with a dual report to the Mine Operations Superintendent. The Sr. Mine Engineer will work closely with the Engineering, Production, and Maintenance Departments to support mine projects and improvement initiatives. The Sr. Mine Engineer will actively participate in the mine continuous improvement process.

Mining Engineering

• Work closely with Chief Engineer and Mine Technicians to develop and update mine plans, both long-term and short-term.

• Work closely with Chief Engineer, Production Department, and Mine Technicians to conduct mine surveys and ensure working points are kept up to date in development areas.

• Work closely with Chief Engineer and Mine Technician to conduct mine ventilation surveys and optimize the ventilation system.

• Work closely with the Rock Mechanics engineer and Rock Mechanics Technician to maintain and optimize ground control.

• Work with Production Department to develop budgetary models and maintain production cost forecasts.

• Assume a key role in mine risk management process and develop risk control mitigation plans and projects.

Mine Process Improvement

• Assume a key role in the mine Continuous Improvement Process.

• Conduct time studies, process audits, and benchmarking exercises to identify areas of opportunity.

• Work closely with Mine Production department to investigate opportunities to improve all aspects of the mining process and to reduce mining cost.

• Works closely with engineering, maintenance, and production departments to optimize the material handling process, from face to surface storage domes.

• Investigate and optimize drilling and blasting techniques to improve performance and reduce fines.

• Investigate new mining methods, mine plans, mine processes, and mining equipment that might improve mining efficiency and cost.

Project Management

• Prepares and submits capital appropriation requests, including return calculations.

• Implements projects and actively manages to ensure project schedule and budget commitments are met and project delivers agreed to benefits and objectives.

• Supports Engineering Manager in preparing annual capital budgets.

• Develops and manages engineering and construction contracts.

• Implements construction/installation strategies that coordinate with Mine production plan.

• Simultaneously manages multiple capital projects effectively.

• 7+ years mining engineering or mine supervisory experience preferred but not required.

• Ability to obtain Ontario PE required.

• Complete proficiency with Microsoft Office programs is required.

• AutoCAD, MS Project, CMMS systems, highly desirable.

• Other mining related software experience a plus.

W hat is the work schedule?

• This is a Monday-Friday position. Overtime may be required in order to support a 24/7 operation.

• This position is expected to work underground.
