What We Need
The Sr. Underwriter is responsible for the profitability of an assigned book of business, including prospective and renewing business in the 51-99 and 100+ market segment. In addition, the Sr. Underwriter will provide support for financial management reports, participate in the development of new products and rating methodologies, and other assigned projects to improve underwriting operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Calculate rates accurately and timely for 51-99 and 100+ prospective opportunities, and 100+ renewing accounts in the Commercial and Municipal market segments.
- Work with various funding arrangements, including insured, self-insured, and level funded.
- Apply critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
- Ensure adherence to Underwriting Policies and Procedures; approve exceptions when necessary.
- Develop pricing strategies to achieve profitability and market share targets within approved authority levels.
- Contribute to the development of new rating practices.
- Prepare actuarial and underwriting analyses for proposals and renewals, including account and contribution strategies.
- Analyze and explain the advantages and disadvantages of various programs in competitive bids.
- Monitor and report on profitability and persistency of the book of business.
- Negotiate prices with customers and brokers to retain/grow enrollment and meet profitability goals.
- Present financial proposals and renewals to internal stakeholders.
- Assist in developing financial presentations for internal and external audiences.
- Perform ad-hoc projects as assigned.
- Develop SME proficiency in underwriting topics.

- Proficient in Excel and Word; capable of learning new software tools.
Experience and Education:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, preferably in Finance or Economics.
- HIAA or CEBS designation preferred.
- At least 5 years of group health underwriting experience required.
- Excellent communication skills to explain complex concepts clearly.
- Customer service orientation with the ability to work independently.
- Attention to detail and high performance standards.
- Experience managing multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
- Knowledge of health benefit programs from risk and cash flow perspectives.

The posted salary range reflects the company's current good-faith estimate of pay for this role. Actual pay may vary based on multiple factors. This role is eligible for variable pay and benefits, including paid time off, insurance, 401(k), and well-being programs.
