Senior Mechanical Engineer – Hydropower & Dams

Whom we seek has experience with design, application, operation and testing of generating and other mechanical equipment that is found in service at a hydroelectrical facility plus a background in technology evaluation, managing projects, and mentoring people.

Your Key Responsibilities

Strengthen Team

1. Observe and personify safety and quality culture
2. With high-level guidance but responsible for approach and execution, develop solutions to a variety of diverse engineering problems involving hydropower equipment selection, design, testing and life extension
3. Perform field support during installation and construction through monitoring for quality control and consistency with the design specifications
4. Prepare written communications regarding design basis, options analyses, schedule and cost estimating
5. Review commercial contracts for construction and installation services
6. Motivate team to work together efficiently and mitigate team conflict
7. Assist in career development, succession planning, coaching and mentoring, and leadership development
8. Understand skills, capabilities and gaps in Stantec’s business lines across Canada, support international collaboration
9. Understand complexity of a given client project and match with appropriate staffing suggestions
10. Identify skill gaps and propose mitigation/training for team members or team at large
11. Present training modules comfortably in own area of expertise
12. Prepare preliminary and detailed designs and specifications for hydroelectric generating stations and spillways
13. Oversee and guide the preparation of civil/structural drawings for construction
14. Prepare technical reports, memoranda, and meeting minutes
15. Perform individually or as a team member within civil/structural discipline and on interdisciplinary projects;
16. Perform interdisciplinary coordination with other engineering disciplines per project requirements;
17. Support field team in construction services including site inspection and contract administration;
18. Manage small projects independently;
19. Manage time spent on design and project tasks to meet established project-specific workplans (cost, quality, timelines);
20. Contribute to coaching and peer review of the team’s less experienced professionals;
21. Assist in the preparation of proposals;
22. Other duties as assigned.

1. Works collaboratively with Project Engineers and Project Managers to assist in planning, design, CAD drafting and preparation of drawings, bid documents, technical specifications, and capital cost estimates in connection with a variety of engineering projects
2. Communicates with other team members and become familiar with Stantec standards
3. Meet HSSE goals and targets and personal utilization requirements
4. Communicate at ease and habitually across the corporate hierarchy
5. Understand project management principles and apply consistently according to Stantec 10-Step process
6. Understand and apply appropriately our risk review process
7. Be able to scale administrative process to size and type of application and identify potential for improvements

Your Capabilities and Credentials

1. Mechanical engineer with a degree from an accredited university. Post graduate degree in a renewable energy application an asset.
2. Knowledge of a variety of software programs used in engineering analysis and design; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
3. Project management experience with demonstrated organizational and communication skills
4. Solid technical background with proficiency in the inspection, condition assessment, analysis, and design of components for hydropower and dam projects, such as:
5. Analyses of gate equipment for flow control structures. Hands on experience of FEA software Ansys or Abaqus would be asset.
6. Mechanical Balance of Plant Equipment for Powerhouses
7. Powerhouse cranes and other hoisting equipment
8. Penstocks and associated structures
9. Experience with Mathcad, MS office tools, Experience on other FEA software packages Ansys or Abaqus would be considered an asset;
10. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
11. Project management experience with demonstrated organizational and communication skills.

Education and Experience

1. Minimum of 10 years’ experience with hydroelectric plant preferably within a consulting engineering environment
2. Professional designation obtained in at least one Canadian Province (P.Eng.)

Position will primarily work in home office setting; may require office attendance in Hamilton, Ontario and field work.
