Job description

The Company

Climate change is the defining challenge of our time, and the team at Invert is building innovative tools that empower individuals and businesses alike to tackle the problem head on. We are a team of experienced start-up scalers that have taken ideas from a whiteboard to the New York Stock Exchange, all while maintaining a focus on a rewarding, award-winning team culture. At this early stage of Invert's growth, we're looking for talented people who are passionate about making a difference through their work.

We invest in projects that result in carbon credits being created, such as planting a forest or building a machine that sucks CO2 from the air. By selling these credits on to individuals or businesses, we are able to generate revenue that lets us make more investments in projects that reduce or remove CO2, and we continue the cycle!

Place of Work

We work virtually with a preference for candidates based in or near Vancouver, Ottawa or Toronto, Canada. Our team meetings are held within EST working hours.

Our Fit

We’re strong believers that diversity, equity and inclusion are a key strength and integral to our future success. We want colleagues that can think differently, bring a range of experiences, are creative within their role, and know how to drive towards a team goal. We value both experience and expertise but emphasize capitalizing on the future potential of remarkable people. We’re looking for colleagues who want to take action on climate change and drive our society towards net zero emissions by 2050. We believe in working hard and in being flexible in how we get things done. We believe that working with good and kind people is as important as working with smart people. Our compensation model embodies rewards for performance and we believe everyone in the company should share in the upside of our success. In order to ensure this, we offer equity participation in addition to salary.

Invert is a proud B Corp dedicated to flipping climate pessimism upside down by empowering businesses to make meaningful change and rewiring the economy to reward integrity and innovation.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Lead for Nature-Based Carbon Project Development to drive the design, development, and execution of high-integrity carbon projects. The ideal candidate will have expertise in insetting, large-scale nature-based solutions, methodology selection and design, agroforestry, and working with small landowners.

This role will involve technical oversight of project feasibility assessments, carbon accounting methodologies, and implementation strategies, ensuring projects generate high-quality carbon credits while delivering biodiversity and community co-benefits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Development & Strategy:
  • Support the technical design and execution of nature-based carbon projects, including insetting and offsetting initiatives.
  • Develop strategies for large-scale projects, balancing carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and community benefits.
  • Methodology Selection & Carbon Accounting:
  • Identify and select the most appropriate carbon methodologies and standards for each project.
  • Design and implement Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) protocols.
  • Develop carbon quantification models and conduct feasibility assessments.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Capacity Building:
  • Collaborate with small landowners, Indigenous groups, corporate insetting teams, NGOs, and government agencies.
  • Provide technical training and support to project partners on carbon standards, agroforestry best practices, and climate resilience strategies.
  • Geospatial Analysis & Remote Sensing (Bonus if applicable):
  • Utilize GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine) to assess land suitability and project impact.
  • Integrate remote sensing data into carbon stock assessments and land-use planning.
  • Regulatory & Market Alignment:
  • Stay updated on voluntary and compliance carbon markets and ensure project alignment with emerging standards.
  • Support the certification process and engagement with verification bodies.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Experience & Expertise:
  • 5+ years in nature-based carbon project development, forestry, agroforestry, or sustainable land use.
  • Demonstrated expertise in insetting strategies, large-scale forestry/agroforestry projects, and smallholder engagement.
  • Experience selecting and applying carbon accounting methodologies (e.g., VCS, CAR, etc).
  • Proven track record of developing and certifying carbon projects.
  • Knowledge and culturally relevant understanding of land tenure, community engagement, and biodiversity conservation principles in remote areas.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Strong understanding of carbon quantification, MRV frameworks, and project validation/verification processes.
  • GIS and remote sensing expertise (ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine), with emphasis on temporal analysis and modeling.
  • Familiarity with forest growth models, soil carbon dynamics, and ecosystem restoration techniques.
  • Soft Skills & Additional Qualifications:
  • Ability to work with diverse stakeholders (corporates, smallholders, Indigenous communities, NGOs).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Multilingual skills (e.g., Spanish, Portuguese) are highly desirable for global project engagement.

Preferred but Not Required:

  • Experience with B.C.'s Forest Carbon Offset Protocol (FCOP).
  • Experience with corporate insetting programs and standards.
  • Experience with satellite, drone-based, and ground level monitoring technologies.
  • Knowledge of emerging carbon finance mechanisms (biodiversity credits, sustainability-linked bonds, large-scale NBS financial structuring).

Why Join Invert?

  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge, high-impact carbon projects.
  • Engage with leading climate organizations and corporate sustainability teams.
  • Play a key role in shaping global nature-based climate solutions.
