Job summary

A leading company in optical communications is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer in Ottawa. The role involves designing high-speed assemblies, creating working drawings, and collaborating with both internal teams and external customers. Ideal candidates will hold at least a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering and possess strong CAD skills, particularly in CREO and Solidworks.

Qualifications

  • Experience in mechanical design for high-speed assemblies.
  • Knowledge of design for manufacturing.
  • Proficient with design documentation and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Support design and manufacturing introduction for optical communication assemblies.
  • Generate mechanical design fixtures and assembly manuals.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers.

The primary responsibility of the mechanical design engineer will be to support the design and introduction to manufacturing for high-speed, highly integrated assemblies for the optical communications market. A successful candidate should have experience in the following areas :

  • Knowledge in CAD design software, preferably CREO and Solidworks
  • Knowledge in opto-mechanical module MSA form factor requirements.
  • Knowledge in manual and automated Micro-manipulars and their applications; i.e. NewPort XYZ stage and Hexapod.
  • Knowledge in designing and assembling parts for electrical and / or optical Probe stations.
  • Experience in performing FEA stress and thermal modeling on electro-optical assemblies

Supplementary Tasks

  • Experience in generation mechanical design fixtures required for PCB test boards or optical alignment support brackets or grippers.
  • Generating working drawings and mechanical assembly manuals to submit / upload to ADTRAN data management system (Agile).
  • Obtain quotations and lead times and ordering prototype parts from local machine shops.
  • Other duties as required.

Skills / Qualifications / Training / Experience

  • BS or MS in Mechanical engineering.
  • Design for Manufacturing knowledge for Mechanical design parts.
  • Knowledge in using mechanical measuring devices : Vernier calipers, Micrometers, Keyence Microscope or other.
  • Proficiency in writing mechanical specifications for assembly manual instructions.

Requirements & Work Environment

  • Able to generate high quality design documents.
  • Good communication skills. Written and verbal.
  • Self-motivated and perform with minimum supervision.
