Overview
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing and developing robust and innovative medical devices and equipment to support the commercialization of company-developed products. Responsibilities include cost estimation, design, verification, and validation. The role involves designing active and passive electromechanical structures with various degrees of freedom. Assignments are broad, requiring initiative, originality, ingenuity, and excellent problem-solving skills.
Responsibilities
- Serve as technical lead and project engineer for major development projects or multiple simultaneous projects.
- Research design options and perform experiments to determine potential design feasibility.
- Develop and test new manufacturing processes.
- Collaborate closely with electrical and software engineers, designing with a system-wide perspective.
- Interact with global and internal design and manufacturing resources to ensure designs are manufacturable, reliable, and cost-effective.
- Specify and manage tool development.
- Create and release product requirements, design specifications, and descriptions, ensuring compliance with medical device standards and internal procedures.
- Follow all policies, procedures, and standards for engineering documentation for compliance.
- Review product documentation for accuracy, including documentation for customer use.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to the mechanical engineering team.
- Lead designing, prototyping, testing, and qualification activities for high-reliability medical devices.
- Assist in project planning and provide technical leadership in project execution.
- Lead and support risk assessments, design reviews, pre-production, testing, and regulatory submissions.
- Support production activities and resolve issues promptly.
- Evaluate product non-conformances and recommend modifications.
- Lead development of intellectual property.
- Guide critical decision-making on complex, high-impact projects.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 8+ years of related technical experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering required; MS or PhD preferred.
- P.Eng from EGBC preferred; ability and willingness to obtain a P.Eng license required.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and add-ins.
- Experience leading design, prototyping, testing, and qualification processes.
- Strong knowledge of plastic injection mold tool design, including insert molding and over-molding.
- Proven project development experience in a medical device R&D environment.
- Ability to define project goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Sound engineering judgment and ability to write concise, detailed documentation.
- Experience with Medical Device Directive (MDD), ISO 13485, FDA design controls, or similar regulations is preferred.
*For applicants without an Engineer in Training or Professional Engineer license, an alternative title will be used until licensed. Verathon supports professional growth, including reimbursements for EGBC licensing expenses.
