Role Overview:
As Senior Legal Counsel at Medavie, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring legal compliance across all areas of the organization. You will identify legal risks associated with new business opportunities and monitor legislative changes that impact the business. Your expertise will guide significant projects, strategic initiatives, and contract negotiations, ensuring the organization operates within legal frameworks and mitigates risks effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

Contract Management: Triages contract review requests and assigns them to the appropriate resource (external vs. internal counsel).

Quality Assurance: Reviews team members’ work to ensure accuracy before presenting findings to clients.

Legal Advice: Provides practical legal advice to departmental leaders, managing business risks.

Regulatory Compliance: Maintains up-to-date knowledge of legal and regulatory environments for Medavie Inc. and its subsidiaries.

Project Contribution: Participates in significant projects, strategic initiatives, and prepares quarterly reports for the Board and Senior Management Team.

External Counsel Management: Selects and approves external legal counsel firms and interfaces with them on various legal matters.

Litigation Oversight: Oversees lawsuits and legal expenses.

Privacy Support: Provides guidance to the Chief Privacy Officer on privacy matters.

Policy Development: Contributes to the development and implementation of legal and compliance policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

LL.B or J.D. from an accredited Canadian University, or equivalent qualification.

Expertise in commercial law, contracts law, and insurance law.

10+ years of experience as a practicing lawyer in a Canadian jurisdiction.

Experience as in-house counsel in a Canadian organization (unionized or non-unionized).

Preferred experience in financial services or other highly regulated industries (e.g., insurance, banking, energy).

Member in good standing with the Law Society in at least one province in Canada.

Strong drafting and negotiation skills.

Business acumen and understanding of compliance and regulatory adherence.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Experience in working with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in legal matters.
