Job summary

Town of Oakville is seeking a part-time Senior Leader to support supervision of programs at the Town of Oakville Youth Centres. You will work under the Recreation Assistant to ensure safe, engaging activities for youth and assist in program delivery.

Qualified candidates are enrolled in or have completed a Recreation Leadership or Youth Services program, with 3 years of youth work or volunteering, and current First Aid/CPR C certification. Evenings and weekends required.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in or completed a university or college program in Recreation Leadership, Youth Services, or a related field.
• 3 years’ work or volunteer experience interacting with youth; leadership abilities.

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing and implementing programming and activities for the Town of Oakville Youth Centres.
• Assist in the delivery of registered programs or activities for the Town of Oakville.
• Assist in the supervision of the Centre during operating hours.
• Assist the Recreation Assistant with needs assessment of youth issues at the Youth Centre.
• Ensure safety of all participants; document accidents/incidents within 24 hours.
• Report health and safety incidents as per training guidelines.
• React to emergencies and behaviour management per procedures.
• Foster a positive, welcoming, inclusive environment for participants and staff.
• Act as a role model and mentor for youth; promote positive social behaviour.
• Maintain attendance records for drop-in and registered participants.
• Participate in required trainings and provide excellent customer service.
• Other duties as assigned.

Job Responsibilities:

This position reports to the Recreation Assistant at our Town of Oakville - Youth Centre facilities and is responsible for assisting the Recreation Assistant in supervising programs and participants of the Town of Oakville - Youth Centres.

The duties of this position include:

• Assist in developing and implementing programming and activities for the Town of Oakville Youth Centres, in collaboration with youth participants and other Recreation and Culture staff.
• Assist in the delivery of registered programs or activities for the Town of Oakville.
• Assist in the supervision of the Centre during operating hours.
• Assist the Recreation Assistant with needs assessment of youth issues at the Youth Centre.
• Ensure the continuing safety of all participants while at the program with the assistance of the Recreation Assistant. Advise and document all accidents/incidents immediately. All reports must be received by the department within 24 hours.
• Report and document all health and safety related incidents as per job training guidelines and report to Full Time staff immediately.
• React to emergency situations and behaviour management issues in accordance to department approved procedures.
• Foster a positive, welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants and staff.
• Act as a role model and mentor for youth participants. Encourage and promote positive social behaviour, healthy relationships with peers, community engagement and self-efficacy.
• Maintain accurate attendance of drop-in and registered participants.
• Support the objectives and philosophies of youth programming as established by the Recreation and Culture department.
• Actively participate in all department required trainings.
• Provide excellent customer service.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in or completed a university or college program in Recreation Leadership, Youth Services, or a related field.
• 3 years’ work or volunteer experience interacting effectively and positively with young people, demonstrating strong leadership abilities.May also consider those with an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Current Intermediate First Aid with CPR C (formerly Standard First Aid with CPR C) from a WSIB-approved provider, issued within the last three (3) years and valid throughout the term of employment
• CPI Non-violent Intervention Training or equivalent is considered an asset.
• Counselling skills, behaviour management training and effective communications skills with a youth focus is an asset.
• HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) Certification is an asset.
• Strong problem solving and effective program planning skills.
• Ability to work non-traditional hours including evenings and weekends.
