The Role

We are looking for a Senior Instrumentation Technologist to support the Montreal Road Wind Tunnel Facilities group of the Aerospace Research Centre. The Senior Instrumentation Technologist would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect, and Creativity.

As a Senior Instrumentation Technologist, you will work as part of the Montreal Road Facility Support Group of the Aerodynamic Laboratory, providing lead technical support in wind tunnel instrumentation maintenance and development for the four facilities on campus. Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Planning, executing, and supervising (occasionally) preventive and corrective maintenance of industrial instrumentation including electronic transmitters, control valves, switches, sensors, etc;
  • Executing and supervising (occasionally) the calibration of critical and non-critical instruments following existing procedures and quality system work instructions based on the NRC Aerospace Quality Management System (QMS), as well as continuous improvement of the procedures;
  • Ensuring data quality provided by the instruments through data analysis to comply with the QMS;
  • Developing software and hardware applications to perform calibration routines for instruments;
  • Assisting in the design, development, and assembly of electronic and real-time computer hardware/software used for control and measurement in the wind tunnel facilities of the laboratory;
  • Providing technical expertise for defining requirements and selecting scientific instrumentation, components, software, and equipment;
  • Maintaining health monitoring equipment for wind tunnel systems and deriving predictive maintenance trends;
  • Troubleshooting facility systems during downtime;
  • Generating work procedures, guidelines, and hazard assessments;
  • Training and mentoring junior technologists, liaising with Project Engineers and Facility Engineers to maintain the facilities.
Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within their application that they meet the following criteria for further consideration:

Education

Post-secondary education in Engineering, Instrumentation, Electrical Technology, or a related field.

  • Significant* and recent** experience in experimental measurement techniques and signal conditioning/processing;
  • Significant and recent experience in the design, specification, and development of instrumentation, data acquisition, and control systems hardware and software;
  • Experience in maintenance, calibration, operation, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic measurement instrumentation under pressure for rapid solutions;
  • Experience using laboratory programming languages (LabVIEW, MATLAB, or similar) for custom software development and hardware integration;
  • Experience analyzing large test data sets with software tools;
  • Experience in programming languages/environments such as LabView, C, C++, MATLAB, etc., for control and data acquisition system development;
  • Experience planning and implementing technical projects, including task delegation, cost estimates, status updates, and scheduling.

*Significant experience is defined as at least 2 years
**Recent experience is within the last 5 years

Condition of Employment

Reliability Status

Verification of background information over a 5-year period is required for a Reliability Status.

The following criteria will be used for assessment:

  • Advanced knowledge in specifying, installing, and calibrating instrumentation, sensors, and data acquisition hardware for temperature, pressure, flow, and vibration measurements, including calibration standards;
  • Basic skills in using hand tools for instrumentation panel building;
  • Advanced knowledge of software design principles and tools such as Excel, LabView, and Matlab;
  • Knowledge of safety best practices in industrial facilities;
  • Advanced knowledge of measurement techniques, feedback control systems, and signal processing;
  • Advanced knowledge of electronic and electromechanical systems troubleshooting and repair;
  • Advanced knowledge of calibration methods, standards, and measurement accuracy analysis.

  • Technology support - Conceptual and analytical ability (Level 2)
  • Technology support - Results orientation (Level 2)
