Job description

The role of the Senior Hydrogeologist in the Brownfield Assessment and Development service group is to strengthen and expand MEMS’s services with a focus on technical expertise in the provision of contaminated sites assessment and risk assessment to operating and non-operating facilities across Ontario, and other jurisdictions in Canada as experience fits. The primary responsibility of this role is the successful completion of and client satisfaction with projects undertaken in alignment with MEMS overall corporate strategy and its mission, values, goals and objectives. This is a senior role requiring high quality project management and project execution, with an emphasis on building the skill sets within MEMS that create and foster long-term client relationships, create repeat business and opportunities to expand services within a culture that promotes career growth of junior and intermediate employees within the service group.

Key Responsibilities:

Growth of Technical Capabilities
  • Participate in expanding MEMS’ technical and technology capabilities as needed to align our technical capabilities with the plans established to position the service group for growth;
  • Actively promoting career development and training opportunities for staff to align individual careers with the opportunities being developed by the corporation;
  • Scope and manage the execution of hydrogeological studies to support assessment, remediation, risk management or exposure control projects in a variety of land uses;
  • Identify in-house and third-party resources needed and assigning individual responsibilities;
  • Execute all aspects of the project in accordance with the contract and ensuring quality of processes and deliverables;
  • Full sign-off authority on project deliverables.
Hydrogeological Modelling Execution and Team Development
  • Occupy a leadership position within the Hydrogeology Modelling group with respect to resource coordination and allocation;
  • Technical standard operating procedure and best practices development and maintenance;
  • Development and application of innovation and technology according to MEMS business growth planning;
  • Participate with a team of technical experts to develop, apply and/or review numerical groundwater fate and transport modelling techniques to determine solutions for contaminated sites, environmental and water resources challenges;
  • Work individually or as part of a team to interpret and analyze various forms of geologic and hydrogeologic data to build conceptual models of the groundwater regimes including contaminated sites;
  • Evaluation of hydrogeologic and hydrogeochemical conditions which will contribute to subsurface contaminant fate and transport including field data compilation and analysis;
  • Model review for unsaturated and/or saturated flow systems including domain construction, calibration and sensitivity analysis;
  • Development of senior review competency for groundwater modelling reports.
Mentorship and Training
  • Identify competency gaps within the discipline and assist in the coordination of required training;
  • Contribute to the development and evolution of mentorship and competency training programs;
  • Collaborate internally with Executive, Employee Resources, Service Group Directors to develop and evolve effective service group teams;
  • Provide direct mentorship of staff;
  • Other duties as required.
Business Growth
  • Participating in the planning cycle of positioning the service group for growth and implementing the actions that are required to achieve plan goals;
  • Oversight of service/project delivery from proposal through project completion of assigned responsibilities within the Brownfield Assessment and Development service group;
  • Contributing, implementing and maintaining client business growth plans, creating the conditions that result in long-term repeat business;
  • Developing & managing diverse clients and portfolios of projects;
  • Compliance with MEMS’ systems including project financial management and project safety;
  • Working collaboratively with key staff, contractors and stakeholders.

What You Bring:

  • Minimum 12 years of directly related experience as a Contaminant Hydrogeologist, preferably in a consulting environment.
  • Have a detailed understanding of site-specific risk assessment procedures and of the basis for and models underlying risk based environmental guidelines.
  • A track record of completing site-specific risk assessments and developing appropriate risk based remedial objectives for sites of intermediate to significant complexity with limited supervision is essential.
  • Experience successfully managing and maintaining client relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to build succinct, clear and appropriate conceptual site models from diverse datasets of previous investigations and mentor others in this regard.
  • Advanced understanding of O.Reg 153/04 soil, groundwater and sediment standards and how they apply.
  • Basic knowledge of all the key skills for risk assessment including hydrogeology, soil science, environmental chemistry, contaminant transport, modelling, human health and ecological toxicity is expected.
  • Advanced experience developing risk-based site management strategies will be an asset.
  • Experience with contaminant transport modelling in groundwater, unsaturated soil moisture, soil vapor or other environmental media is an asset.
  • Eligibility for membership in a relevant professional organization is required.
  • Must be able to meet the requirements of site access as dictated by our clients, this may include pre-access drug, alcohol and fitness testing;
  • Possess a valid, non-GDL Class 5 Drivers license.

Other Skills and Knowledge:

  • Advanced knowledge and experience with current provincial and federal legislation and familiarity with the environmental site assessment process.
  • Advanced understanding and the ability to effectively apply Ontario regulatory guidance such as O.Reg 153/04 to contaminated sites.
  • Strong understanding of the contaminant hydrogeology in commercial/industrial/brownfields environmental settings.
  • Ability to provide technical expertise for challenging projects.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Strong writing skills and technical competency.
  • Knowledge of numerical modeling;
  • Good communications and organizational skills;
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and be able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary setting;
  • Good mentoring skills;
  • Able to meet deadlines and work under pressure.

Working Conditions:

  • Flexible office and work-from-home environment. Occasional site visits may be required.
  • Prolonged exposure to computer keyboards and computer screens.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Sometimes requires long hours of work. Occasional interruptions outside work hours and travel to other locations are required;
  • Required to walk, stand, climb, bend forward, kneel down, crawl, reach and grasp, push and pull objects, lift and/or move up to 30 lb, sometimes over the shoulders, repetitive bending and lifting of items, along with repetitive arm movements.
