We are proud that TWC’s team of specialists are some of the most respected voices in our areas of practice.

We are seeking Senior Human Environment Specialists to join our growing team. The preferred candidates will have excellent critical thinking, organizational and problem-solving skills, and a strong team focus. Experience engaging with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit in an impact assessment context and working on regulated resource projects in a variety of sectors is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engagement support to inform the development and execution of federal, territorial, and provincial impact assessment processes, including the assessment of potential effects on Indigenous interests.
  • Oversee and design engagement programs, including coordinating and conducting engagement activities (both virtual and in-person), researching, compiling data, drafting reports, and developing summary recommendations.
  • Ensure adherence to all appropriate regulatory requirements, and implementation of best practices in First Nations, Métis, and Inuit engagement, including the completion and filing of any required documentation.
  • Provide technical direction on how to conduct engagement in a culturally safe manner that fosters collaboration and facilitates information sharing between various audiences.
  • Develop approachable engagement materials which apply contributions from multi-disciplinary teams (e.g. western science, Indigenous Knowledge, business, and engineering functions).
  • Develop and implement communication and outreach programs to share project and regulatory information, respond to inquiries and feedback, and provide opportunities for mutual engagement between proponents and communities.
  • Support, manage and track communication processes between clients, discipline teams, and regulatory agencies.
  • Keep up to date with changes to Canadian federal, territorial, and provincial impact assessment legislation and practices, and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit rights, consultation law, and best practices, and changes to engagement platforms, tools and best practices and implement them appropriately in client work.
  • Contribute to discipline-specific business development by establishing strategic relationships, leading relevant proposal writing, networking, and seeking new opportunities.
  • Follow Quality Assurance and Quality Control processes and maintain standards for confidentiality.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum undergraduate degree in a social science or environmental discipline (geography, environmental sciences or studies, ecology, political science, sociology, etc.). Graduate degree in a related field and/or other continuing education or professional designation are assets.
  • 10+ years of experience planning, organizing, and conducting First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit engagement activities associated with regulated impact assessments, including professional consulting experience.
  • Experience collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to advance meaningful engagement and meet regulatory requirements and client objectives.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating and leading regulatory engagement processes, developing relationships, and supporting collaborative advancement of regulatory applications with First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit peoples.
  • Experience working with proponents, regulators, and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit on large complex projects.
  • Knowledge of Canadian federal, territorial, and provincial legislation regarding consultation, engagement, impact assessment, and social due diligence and permitting, based on professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience providing strategic engagement advice that aligns with regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Expert communication skills including strong technical writing skills.
  • Working knowledge and familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Able to work well in a team and independently with limited instruction under deadlines.
  • First Nations, Métis, or Inuit lived experience is an asset.
