Job summary

Walters Group is a family-owned steel construction company with over 65 years of experience, based in Hamilton, Ontario. The Fitter will fabricate, assemble and fit structural steel, read blueprints, and use cranes and welding equipment to support diverse projects in North America.

Responsibilities include rigging, material handling, torch and drill operation, and mentoring apprentices. This role is located at the Stoney Creek fabrication facility with a strong safety focus.

Qualifications

• Must have a minimum of three-year apprenticeship in metal fabrication or welding asset.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
• Ability to read a tape measure in metric and imperial.

Responsibilities

• Fabricate, assemble and fit structural steel assemblies.
• Rig, hoist and move materials; perform crane checks prior to use.
• Lay out reference points and symbols on steel per blueprints.
• Assemble and fit metal sections using tack welding or bolting.
• Operate welding equipment (e.g., flux-cored arc welding).
• Set up and operate torches, drills, clamps and grinders.
• Adhere to safety practices and wear PPE.
• Mentor apprentices and junior fitters.

About the Position:

Reporting to the Team Leader, the Fitter will be responsible for but not limited to:

• Fabricating, assembling and fitting structural steel assemblies.
• Rig, hoist and move materials to and from workstation. Performs crane checks daily prior to use to ensure the crane is in working condition, if applicable.
• Lay out reference points and symbols on the structural steel according to the blueprint.
• Assemble and fit metal sections and plates using tack welding, bolting or other methods.
• Operate welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as flux-cored arc welding.
• Set up and operate various equipment such as torches, drills, various clamping tools, squares, disc grinders and other hand held tools.
• Ensure safe work practices are adhered to and appropriate PPE is worn at all times.
• Mentors apprentices and junior fitters by sharing knowledge and safe work practices.

Work Location:

• Stoney Creek Fabrication Facility.

Position Requirements:

• Minimum 5 years of Fitting structural steel experience.
• Completion of three year apprenticeship program in Metal Fabrication or Welding an asset.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
• Ability to read a tape measure in both metric and imperial.
• Ability to operate overhead cranes.
• Current or past CWB certification for FCAW, MCAW.
• Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures.
• A team player, who can interrelate and operate effectively with peers and other associates within a collegial, yet demanding, work environment.
• Organization Skills and the ability to be flexible in managing changing priorities.
• Communication skills – both written and oral.
• Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
• Analytical and problem solving skills.

Compensation Package:

• Wage: $31.00-$40.00/Hour
