Job summary

Walters Group, a family-owned steel construction company, is seeking a Fitter for our Princeton Fabrication Facility in Ontario. The role involves fabricating, fitting and assembling structural steel, reading blueprints, operating cranes and welding equipment, and mentoring apprentices.

Requires a minimum of 3 years' fitting experience, blueprint and tape-measure literacy, and preferably a CWB FCAW/MCAW certification.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of structural steel fitting experience.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
• Ability to read tape measures in metric and imperial.
• Ability to operate overhead cranes.
• CWB FCAW/MCAW certification preferred.
• Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures.
• Team player in a collegial, demanding environment.
• Strong organizational skills and adaptability.
• Solid written and oral communication; detail-oriented and analytical.

Responsibilities

• Fabricate, assemble and fit structural steel assemblies.
• Rig, hoist and move materials; perform crane checks as needed.
• Lay out reference points and symbols from blueprints.
• Assemble/fit metal sections using tack welding or bolting.
• Operate welding equipment including flux-cored arc welding.
• Set up and operate torches, drills, clamps, squares, grinders, and similar tools.
• Maintain safe work practices and use PPE at all times.
• Mentor apprentices and junior fitters.

About the Position:

Reporting to the Team Leader, the Fitter will be responsible for but not limited to:

• Fabricating, assembling and fitting structural steel assemblies.
• Rig, hoist and move materials to and from workstation. Performs crane checks daily prior to use to ensure the crane is in working condition, if applicable.
• Lay out reference points and symbols on the structural steel according to the blueprint.
• Assemble and fit metal sections and plates using tack welding, bolting or other methods.
• Operate welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as flux-cored arc welding.
• Set up and operate various equipment such as torches, drills, various clamping tools, squares, disc grinders and other hand held tools.
• Ensure safe work practices are adhered to and appropriate PPE is worn at all times.
• Mentors apprentices and junior fitters by sharing knowledge and safe work practices.

Work Location:

• Princeton Fabrication Facility.

Position Requirements:

• Minimum 3 years of fitting structural steel experience.
• Completion of three year apprenticeship program in Metal Fabrication or Welding an asset.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
• Ability to read a tape measure in both metric and imperial.
• Ability to operate overhead cranes.
• Current or past CWB certification for FCAW, MCAW.
• Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures.
• A team player, who can interrelate and operate effectively with peers and other associates within a collegial, yet demanding, work environment.
• Organization Skills and the ability to be flexible in managing changing priorities.
• Communication skills – both written and oral.
• Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
• Analytical and problem solving skills.

Compensation Package:

• Wage: $23.00-$35.00/Hour
