Job summary

Walters Group in Hamilton, ON is seeking a skilled Fitter with at least 5 years in structural steel fabrication to join our Hamilton fabrication facility. You will lay out, weld, fit, and assemble steel components to blueprints, operate cranes, torches, drills, and other tools, while upholding safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of fitting/fabricating structural steel experience.
  • Completion of apprenticeship in Metal Fabrication or Welding is an asset.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints; read tape measures in metric and imperial.
  • Ability to operate overhead cranes.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricating, assembling and fitting structural steel assemblies.
  • Rig, hoist and move materials; perform crane checks daily.
  • Lay out reference points and symbols on steel per blueprints.
  • Assemble and fit metal sections and plates using tack welding or bolting.
  • Operate welding equipment (e.g., flux-cored arc welding).
  • Set up and operate torches, drills, clamps, squares and grinders.
  • Ensure safety practices and PPE are used; mentor apprentices and junior fitters.

About the Position

Reporting to the Team Leader, the Fitter will be responsible for but not limited to:

  • Fabricating, assembling and fitting structural steel assemblies.
  • Rig, hoist and move materials to and from workstation. Performs crane checks daily prior to use to ensure the crane is in working condition, if applicable.
  • Lay out reference points and symbols on the structural steel according to the blueprint.
  • Assemble and fit metal sections and plates using tack welding, bolting or other methods.
  • Operate welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as flux-cored arc welding.
  • Set up and operate various equipment such as torches, drills, various clamping tools, squares, disc grinders and other hand held tools.
  • Ensure safe work practices are adhered to and appropriate PPE is worn at all times.
  • Mentor apprentices and junior fitters by sharing knowledge and safe work practices.

Position Requirements
  • Minimum 5 years of fitting/fabricating structural steel experience.
  • Completion of apprenticeship program in Metal Fabrication or Welding an asset.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Ability to read a tape measure in both metric and imperial.
  • Ability to operate overhead cranes.
  • Current or past CWB certification for FCAW, MCAW.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures.
  • A team player, who can interrelate and operate effectively with peers and other associates within a collegial, yet demanding, work environment.
  • Organization Skills and the ability to be flexible in managing changing priorities.
  • Communication skills – both written and oral.
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills.
Compensation Package
  • Wage: $23.00-$35.00/Hour
  • Vacation.
