ERG Job Opportunity: Fire Protection Engineer

ERG is a research and consulting firm providing support to federal, state, and commercial clients. We assemble multidisciplinary teams with expertise in engineering, science, economics, public health, IT, and communications. We seek highly motivated individuals with strong skills in prioritization, performance, and effective communication in fast-paced environments.

We are looking for fire protection engineers with experience in operations and maintenance of fire protection systems (FPS) for high-hazard areas such as chemical processing or explosives storage facilities. The role is based at a federal site in Indian Head, Maryland, collaborating closely with engineers and technicians managing various fire detection, alarm, and suppression systems.

This full-time position involves work at the Indian Head site, with support from ERG personnel both onsite and from our Chantilly and Arlington offices. The location is approximately 30 miles from Washington, DC, 25 miles from Alexandria, VA, and 60 miles from Fredericksburg, VA. Alternative work schedules may be considered.

Job Responsibilities:
  1. Plan and monitor preventive maintenance programs complying with federal, local, and industry standards.
  2. Support documentation and troubleshooting of FPS operational issues.
  3. Proactively identify and resolve compliance issues.
  4. Document and develop capital improvement projects through site visits, assessments, and cost estimates.
  5. Review fire protection design for facility improvement projects.
  6. Create and review test plans for FPS modifications.
  7. Assist in testing planning and scheduling.
  8. Analyze and recommend fire protection requirements and space utilization.
  9. Evaluate current operations to identify cost-saving or efficiency improvements.
  10. Communicate effectively with stakeholders.
  11. Manage projects as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience with a fire protection engineering degree, or 10 years with another engineering discipline.
  • Experience with NFPA codes (NFPA 1, 101, 13, 15, 30, 72).
  • Effective collaboration and communication skills.
  • Experience supporting fire alarm and sprinkler systems, FPS drawings, and specifications.
  • Knowledge of life safety in hazardous environments.
  • PE license in Fire Protection Engineering preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
  • Experience with fire safety in high-hazard industrial facilities and DoD requirements.
  • Experience with ultra-high-speed FPS, UV/IR detection technologies, and relevant building codes.
