We seek highly motivated individuals with strong prioritization, performance, and communication skills in a fast-paced environment.

We are hiring fire protection engineers experienced in designing and analyzing fire protection systems (FPS) for high-hazard areas such as chemical processing or explosives storage facilities. The role is based at a federal site in Indian Head, Maryland, collaborating closely with program and construction management teams throughout project lifecycles.

This position involves interaction with ERG personnel at the Indian Head site and from our Fairfax and Arlington offices. Indian Head is approximately 30 miles from Washington, DC, 25 miles from Alexandria, VA, and 60 miles from Fredericksburg, VA.

Job Responsibilities:
  1. Develop requirements and perform technical reviews of design packages, with occasional design work.
  2. Design FPS supporting construction, renovation, and modernization in compliance with federal, local standards, and industry codes.
  3. Review, evaluate, and critique FPS designs in collaboration with A/E firms.
  4. Analyze existing or planned facilities to determine FPS requirements.
  5. Conduct site visits for condition assessment, develop new requirements, and create preliminary scopes and cost estimates.
  6. Review fire protection design for facility improvement projects by third-party firms.
  7. Develop and review test plans for FPS modifications and assist with testing planning.
  8. Prepare technical reports documenting compliance and identify proactive solutions for issues.
  9. Formulate facility fire protection requirements using space utilization studies.
  10. Lead analyses for facility planning, especially for sensitive testing facilities.
  11. Manage project activities related to cost, schedule, risk, and resource optimization.
  12. Prepare or review cost estimates and site proposals for feasibility and client review.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience; 10+ preferred.
  • At least 4 years of fire protection engineering experience with a relevant degree, or 5+ years in another engineering field with a related degree.
  • PE license in Fire Protection Engineering preferred.
  • Experience with NFPA standards (NFPA 1, 101, 13, 15, 30, 72).
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience designing fire alarm and sprinkler systems, developing FPS drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to obtain or hold a DoD Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with fire safety in new construction and renovation.
  • Knowledge of DoD fire protection standards (NAVSEA OP-5, UFC 3-600-01).
  • Experience with ultra-high-speed FPS and UV/IR detection technologies.
  • Familiarity with relevant building codes and regulations.

A signing bonus may be available for highly qualified candidates. ERG offers competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits including health/dental insurance, life and disability coverage, educational benefits, FSAs, a 401k plan with profit sharing, paid leave, holidays, and sick leave.
