Job summary

Our client, a downtown Ottawa not-for-profit organization, is seeking a Senior Financial Accountant to join the finance team. This permanent full-time role reports to the Director, Finance and focuses on accounting, reporting, audit support, and process improvement.

The successful candidate will drive accurate reporting, maintain internal controls, and collaborate with cross-functional teams while leveraging automation to enhance workflows. Hybrid onsite 2–3 days per week.

Qualifications

  • CPA designation and Canadian GAAP knowledge.
  • 7+ years of relevant accounting experience.
  • Familiarity with Canadian tax for not-for-profit organizations.
  • Ability to analyze complex financial information and propose actions.
  • Strong process-improvement skills to standardize finance workflows.
  • Experience with process automation is an asset.
  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint; strong ERP proficiency.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and cross-department collaboration.
  • Strong time management and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Sound judgment and discretion with sensitive financial data.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare financial statements, working papers, reconciliations, and schedules.
  • Lead month-end, quarter-end and year-end close activities.
  • Analyze complex transactions per GAAP and funding agreements.
  • Lead and coordinate external audits.
  • Collaborate with FP&A on budgeting, forecasting, reporting.
  • Maintain and improve accounting processes and internal controls.
  • Implement finance policies and compliance frameworks.
  • Support automation and AI to improve workflows.
  • Document procedures and share knowledge for consistency.
  • Provide backup support across key finance activities.

About The Opportunity

Our client, a well-established not-for-profit organization located downtown Ottawa, is looking for a Senior Financial Accountant to join their growing team. This is a newly created, permanent full-time position reporting to the Director, Finance.

The Senior Financial Accountant will support the finance function through accounting, financial reporting, audit support, compliance and process improvement, bringing strong technical knowledge, sound judgment and practical problem-solving skills to drive accurate reporting and continuous improvement.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare financial statements, working papers, reconciliations and supporting schedules
  • Lead and participate in month-end, quarter-end and year-end closing activities
  • Analyze complex accounting transactions and ensure they comply with applicable accounting standards and funding agreements
  • Lead and coordinate external audit activities
  • Collaborate with Financial Planning & Analysis on budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting
  • Maintain and improve accounting processes, procedures and internal controls
  • Implement finance policies, internal controls and compliance frameworks
  • Support the use of automation, AI and other tools to improve finance workflows
  • Document procedures and share knowledge with colleagues to support consistency and continuity
  • Provide backup support across key finance activities, as required
About You
  • CPA designation
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian GAAP and the ability to apply accounting standards
  • Working knowledge of Canadian tax requirements relevant to not-for-profit organizations, including commodity taxes and taxable benefits
  • Strong ability to analyze complex financial information and recommend practical actions
  • Strong process improvement skills, with the ability to identify efficiencies and improve consistency in finance workflows
  • Experience with process automation is an asset
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, and high proficiency using ERP systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate across departments
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities, both independently and as part of a team
  • Sound judgment and discretion when handling sensitive financial information
About the Job
  • Permanent, full-time position
  • Salary range: $105,000 to $135,000 annually
