Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Business or related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • 8+ years of experience, with ≥5 years in public accounting.
  • 4+ years in Oil & Gas industry and IFRS technical topics (ARO, impairment, derivatives).
  • Strong Excel skills and familiarity with large financial systems (SAP ECC, Analysis, BPC).
  • Audit experience on mid-to-large oil and gas client files is an asset.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and analytic abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform IFRS-based technical accounting assessments for complex, non-routine transactions.
  • Prepare and maintain technical memos documenting judgments, estimates, and conclusions.
  • Coordinate and present financial statements and related notes to management.
  • Deliver Financial Accounting training sessions as required.
  • Coordinate with auditors to plan and execute annual audit field work.
  • Support internal controls over financial reporting in complex areas.
  • Advise operations and commercial teams on accounting implications.
  • Monitor IFRS changes and lead policy and process updates.

PetroChina Canada is recruiting for a Senior Financial Accountant to join the Finance& Accounting Team in Calgary.

Reportingto the Lead, Financial Reporting and Asset Accounting, the Senior FinancialAccountant’s focus will be the timely preparation of accurate and completefinancial reports, which includes providing technical accounting assessmentsfor complex, non-routine transactions in accordance with IFRS. The Senior Financial Accountant will alsoprovide advice and guidance to other Finance team members and operations teams,to help assess system requirements and processes associated with sustaining newand existing business activities.

Accountabilities:

The accountabilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform technical accountingassessments for complex, non-routine transactions in accordance with IFRS,including revenue recognition, asset capitalization, UOP DD&A, impairments,provisions (including ARO/Decommissioning Obligations), leases, and financialinstruments (including embedded derivatives)
  • Prepare and maintain detailedtechnical accounting memos to document judgmental areas, key estimates, andaccounting conclusions, ensuring audit-ready support
  • The preparation and coordination offinancial presentations and analysis for management.
  • Prepare and deliver FinancialAccounting training sessions for other teams as required.
  • Coordinate and consolidate FinancialStatements and related notes.
  • Coordinate with auditors to plan andexecute annual audit field work.
  • Preparate and review annual auditedfinancial statements and notes in accordance with IFRS.
  • Coordinate and consolidate profit andloss, balance sheet, and cash flow budget submissions.
  • Monitor new and amended IFRSstandards, assess their impact on the organization, and lead implementationefforts including policy updates and process changes
  • Provide technical accounting guidanceand subject matter expertise to finance, operations, and commercial teams ontransaction structuring and accounting implications
  • Partner with internal stakeholders andexternal auditors to resolve complex accounting matters and ensure alignment onaccounting positions
  • Support internal controls overfinancial reporting by ensuring appropriate controls are designed and operatingeffectively in complex accounting areas
  • Communicate technical accountingmatters clearly to management, highlighting financial statement impacts, risks,and alternative treatments where applicable.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in Business orrelated discipline from an accredited educational institution
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experienceworking, with at least 5 years in public accounting
  • Extensive experience (4+years) workingwithin the Oil & Gas industry
  • Extensive experience (4+years) withoil and gas specific IFRS technical topics that include researching and writingIFRS technical accounting guidance. Examples of topics an applicant should becomfortable with include ARO, Impairment, reserves and derivatives (includingembedded derivatives)
  • Proficient in use of advanced exceltools
  • Prior experience with large financialsystems (preferably SAP ECC, Analysis, BPC) would be an asset
  • Prior audit experience working onmid-to-large oil and gas client files would be an asset
  • Confident, detail orientated andenthusiastic team player
  • Superior interpersonal, communication,organizational and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage multiple prioritiessimultaneously; capability of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamicbusiness environment
  • Flexibility and adaptability to manageand meet the time demands of unpredictable activities
  • Strong technical, analytical andproblem-solving skills
