Siksika Nation offers an exciting opportunity for a Senior Draftsperson to join their Engineering Services team, supporting the successful delivery of infrastructure projects. Draftspersons at SNES work both in offices and on-site, designing and updating plans for projects such as roads, bridges, and water systems. Their fieldwork includes site visits, surveys, and inspections in rural areas and various weather conditions. They collaborate with engineers, project managers, and Siksika leaders to ensure designs meet community needs and sustainability goals. Key challenges include extreme weather, stakeholder coordination, and compliance with funding requirements, emphasizing their vital role in Siksika’s infrastructure development.

The Senior Design Draftsman plays a crucial role in the engineering design process, focusing on creating and refining complex engineering designs, detailed drawings, and technical documentation for residential and commercial construction projects. This role requires a deep understanding of architectural and engineering principles and proficiency in advanced CAD software to produce high-quality designs.

The ideal candidate will excel at translating complex concepts into precise drawings, ensuring alignment with project specifications and regulatory standards. Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering accurate, timely drawings are essential.

Collaboration is vital, as the Senior Design Draftsman will work closely with architects, engineers, and other professionals across disciplines. Supervision: Reports to Technical Manager, Siksika Engineering Services.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Drafting & Design

• Develop and prepare engineering designs and detailed drawings using preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, and project specifications.
• Create intricate 2D and 3D drawings, charts, and schedules, ensuring as-built drawings reflect field adjustments.
• Draft structural steel drawings, including piling layouts, schedules, concrete layouts, and building drawings adhering to industry standards.
• Produce civil engineering drawings for infrastructure projects.
• Utilize advanced software to create Building Information Models (BIM) for collaborative design and project management.
• Develop conceptual design sketches for analysis and create engineering drawings tailored for production and manufacturing.
• Design innovative layouts demonstrating practical and theoretical engineering knowledge.

Technical Documentation & Analysis

• Prepare design specifications, material lists, and technical reports.
• Verify drawings against specifications, codes, and regulations.
• Estimate material and production costs.
• Review and verify design drawings for conformity.
• Maintain documentation, including Material Take Offs (MTOs) and forms.
• Collaborate with team members to review and refine designs.
• Potentially supervise junior designers/drafters, providing guidance.
• Work within a multidisciplinary team including Process, Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Architectural, Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls, and Piping.
• Coordinate with the design team to review and modify drawings as needed.

Compliance & Quality

• Ensure designs meet company standards, quality requirements, and building codes.
• Maintain accuracy and meet time constraints.
• Set up drawing formats and configuration files.

Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• At least 5+ years of experience as a design draftsman, preferably in residential or commercial construction.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and other CAD software, including 3D modeling tools like SketchUp.
• Strong understanding of architectural and engineering design principles.
• Solid math and analytical skills.
• Knowledge of construction materials and methods.
• Ability to interpret and apply building codes and regulations.
• Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
• Capability to meet safety requirements for site visits.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Building Information Modeling (BIM) software.
• Experience preparing construction specifications, cost estimates, and material estimates.

Education and Experience

Technical school certification or degree in drafting, engineering technology, architecture, or related field, or equivalent experience. A Bachelor's degree or higher in a related field is preferred. Minimum of five years of relevant work experience in residential, commercial construction, or water/wastewater projects.

Professional Designation / Certification / Licenses

• CET, AScT, LEED Certification, ACP, and/or CSWP.
• Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License required.
• Five-year Driver’s Abstract required.

Remuneration and Benefits

$80,000.00 to $90,000.00 per year
