Job summary

Project X Ltd. in Toronto seeks a Senior Data Platform Engineer to evolve an enterprise data platform. The role blends software engineering, DevOps and reliability with a deep understanding of data systems, in an AWS environment including Snowflake, Matillion and Salesforce.

You will shape the approach, build proofs of concept, evaluate tools for observability, orchestration and lineage, and drive production readiness with a pragmatic bias toward usable, well-documented solutions.

Qualifications

Role Summary

We are looking for a Senior Data Platform Engineer to help an enterprise client evolve its data platform. The environment runs on AWS and includes Snowflake, Matillion and Salesforce. The focus is on strengthening the capabilities around the platform, not simply building additional data pipelines. This role combines software engineering, DevOps and reliability experience with a strong understanding of data systems. You will help shape the approach, evaluate options and build proofs of concept for capabilities such as data observability, workflow orchestration and lineage. The specific tools are not predetermined, and part of your contribution will be recommending what fits the team's needs and how it should be operated.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess the current platform with data engineering and technology stakeholders to identify reliability, visibility and workflow gaps.
• Recommend practical approaches to data observability, workflow orchestration and lineage, including when to extend existing capabilities rather than introduce another tool.
• Evaluate potential tools and services against functional needs, integration effort, security, cost and ongoing operational requirements.
• Design and build focused proofs of concept with clear success criteria, and use the results to guide implementation decisions.
• Develop reusable software, integrations and automation to improve platform reliability, maintainability and the experience of data engineering teams.
• Apply software engineering and DevOps practices, including version control, automated testing, CI/CD and repeatable environment configuration.
• Help define monitoring, alerting, failure recovery and incident-response practices for new platform capabilities.
• Work with the team to establish ownership, support responsibilities, documentation and runbooks so successful proofs of concept can become sustainable production capabilities

What We’re Looking For – Required Qualifications

• Experience in a senior data platform, software engineering, platform engineering, DevOps or reliability role, with hands‑on responsibility for production systems.
• Strong programming and problem‑solving skills, including Python or a comparable language, SQL, APIs and automated testing.
• Experience building or supporting cloud‑based data platforms, with an understanding of data pipelines, orchestration, data quality and warehouse operations.
• Practical DevOps experience with CI/CD, deployment automation, environment management and secure configuration.
• A reliability mindset: the ability to diagnose failures, improve monitoring, design recovery approaches and reduce recurring operational issues.
• The ability to work through ambiguous requirements, compare options, build working prototypes and explain technical trade‑offs clearly.
• Strong collaboration and documentation skills, with a focus on solutions that other teams can understand, support and maintain.

Nice to Have

• Hands‑on experience with AWS and Snowflake.
• Terraform experience for infrastructure as code.
• Experience with Matillion or Salesforce data integrations.
• Experience with Airflow or another workflow orchestration platform.
• Experience implementing data observability, data‑quality monitoring, metadata management or lineage capabilities.
• Experience taking a proof of concept into production, including defining service ownership, supportprocesses and operational readiness
