Position Summary
The Senior Data Engineer plays a critical role in managing and optimizing data systems, ensuring the effective and secure use of hospital data to improve patient outcomes, operational efficiency, and decision-making processes. They are generally responsible for data infrastructure, data integration, Ingestion, governance & quality, acting as a mentor to junior teammates, collaboration with other teams (e.g. IT, privacy, health informatics, clinical), automation and optimization, analytics & reporting, troubleshooting & maintenance, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
Data Architecture & Infrastructure
- Designing and building scalable, secure, and efficient data pipelines and storage systems
- Ensuring that data infrastructure aligns with regulatory requirements (e.g. PHIPA) to protect patient privacy and data security
- Managing cloud-based systems and data lakes or warehouses for storing and processing large clinical and corporate datasets
Data Integration
- Sourcing and integrating data from multiple sources (e.g. Cerner, Infor, standalone systems) into a unified platform for better analysis and reporting
- Work closely with the hospital’s IT teams to ensure interoperability between systems and to ensure that data flows seamlessly across platforms
- Take necessary actions to ensure that data is accessible, reliable, and secure, enabling the hospital's clinical and corporate leadership to leverage data for improved patient care, operational decision-making, and compliance with policies and regulations.
Data Governance and Quality
- Ensuring data quality and integrity by creating processes for data validation, cleaning, and transformation
- Enforcing data governance policies to ensure compliance with regulatory and hospital standards and maintaining patient confidentiality
Leadership
- Provide mentorship to junior engineers through complex technical challenges, helping with troubleshooting data pipelines, managing databases, and optimizing code
- Explaining complex concepts, fostering collaboration, and teamwork
- Demonstrating industry best practices for data security, compliance, and coding
- Knowledge sharing through workshops, training sessions, and documentation
- Provide feedback to junior team members on work, highlighting areas for improvement
- Lead by example through effective communication and modeling approaches to problems
Position Requirements
- Candidate must reside in Ontario.
- Master’s in computer science, Software/Data Engineering or Data Science
- Certificates in Cloud Computing, data engineering & database management
- Six (6) years of prior related experience
- Experience with database management systems such as SQL Server or Oracle
- Proficient with SQL and Python, and experience writing clean, efficient, scalable code
- Expert in data modeling including creating, maintaining, and optimizing data models and data architecture
- Proficient in designing, developing, and managing ETL pipelines
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS and Azure
- Knowledge of healthcare data security standards and governance
- Ability to mentor junior engineers, and provide leadership in design decisions, architectural planning, and troubleshooting complex issues
Preferred Requirements
- PhD preferred
- Experience with healthcare datasets
- Expert in cloud data engineering
- Proven leadership skills
- Project management training an asset
