The Opportunity :

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Data Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in designing, developing, and maintaining robust and scalable data pipelines and architectures that support critical health initiatives across the region. You will work with diverse healthcare data, contributing to projects that directly impact patient care, public health, and health system efficiency. Key Responsibilities :

Design, develop, and implement scalable, reliable, and efficient data pipelines and ETL / ELT processes using various data integration tools and technologies.

  • Develop and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture.
  • Design and build data models for analytical and operational uses.

Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and 'big data' technologies.

  • Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements.
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements : automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  • Develop tools and frameworks to support data quality, governance, and security.

Work closely with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to understand data needs and deliver effective solutions.

  • Mentor junior data engineers and contribute to best practices within the team.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and architectural decisions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve data-related issues, ensuring data integrity and availability.
  • Performance & Optimization :

Optimize data solutions for performance and cost efficiency.

  • Ensure data security and compliance with relevant healthcare regulations (e.g., provincial privacy acts).

Required Qualifications & Experience :

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
  • 5 years of progressive experience in data engineering, with a significant portion in a senior or lead role.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle).
  • Extensive experience with at least one major programming language for data manipulation and scripting (e.g., Python, Scala, Java).
  • Demonstrated experience with big data technologies (e.g., Apache Spark, Hadoop, Kafka).
  • Experience with cloud data platforms (e.g., Azure Data Factory, AWS Glue, Google Cloud Dataflow) is highly desirable. [Specify which cloud platform is primarily used, if applicable.]
  • Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts, ETL / ELT methodologies, and data modeling techniques (dimensional modeling, Kimball, Inmon).
  • Experience with data governance, data quality, and metadata management.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Desired Skills & Assets (Nice-to-Haves) :

  • Experience in the healthcare sector or with healthcare data (e.g., HL7, FHIR).
  • Knowledge of data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
  • Experience with DevOps practices and CI / CD pipelines for data solutions.
  • Certification in relevant cloud platforms or data technologies.
  • Experience with real-time data processing.
