Employment Type: Full Time – Permanent

Salary Range: SP4, Level 6, $116,960.00 - $146,200.00 per year. Final compensation will be based on education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Senior Data Architect to lead the design and delivery of scalable, secure, and business-aligned data architecture. You will guide data architects and modelers, ensuring standards and semantic consistency, collaborating with Solution Architects and Product Owners to translate business requirements into data solutions, and working with Data Practice Leads to drive governance and standardization.

This role involves a blend of hands-on architecture, mentorship, coordination, and strategic alignment within the enterprise data ecosystem.

Daily Responsibilities:

1. Lead data architecture and design efforts with Product Owners and Solution Architects, ensuring solutions align with business needs and strategy.
2. Translate requirements into data models supporting operational systems and analytics, aligning with enterprise standards.
3. Guide Data and Solution Architects on architecture options, ensuring solutions meet business and infrastructure needs.
4. Design data access mechanisms to enable performant, secure APIs.
5. Develop data sharing strategies for secure, governed data exchange.
6. Assess data migration needs and develop implementation plans for modernization and cloud transitions.
7. Collaborate with the Principal/Enterprise Data Modeler to align project data models with enterprise standards.
8. Partner with Data Architecture and Engineering leads to define best practices for standards, security, performance, and architecture patterns.
9. Support governance and compliance across projects.
10. Provide technical leadership and mentorship to data architects and engineers.
11. Maintain comprehensive data architecture documentation.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
• 7–10 years of experience in data architecture, including 5+ years in enterprise IT data services for analytics.
• Proven skills in designing end-to-end data solutions, models, and data flows.
• Experience in cloud data architecture, especially in regulated industries.
• Expertise in data modeling tools (ER/Studio, Visio) and SQL scripting.
• Strong leadership, communication, and mentorship skills.
• Highly organized, adaptable, and capable of managing multiple initiatives.
