Job Description:

The Group Benefits (GB) Analytics team has a mandate to work across functions to deliver insights critical for business decisions, identify growth opportunities, and use data to improve health and financial outcomes. The team collaborates closely with other analytics teams at Sun Life.

Reporting to the Director, Sponsor and Advisor Analytics, the Senior Data Analyst is responsible for developing innovative analytics solutions and elevating the quality of insights and advice to plan sponsors and advisors. Our growing mandate to deliver Data and Analytics Solutions requires an experienced data analytics practitioner to accelerate the development of our strategic sponsor and advisor analytics initiatives.

Please note: this is a fixed-term position for 12 months, which offers benefits and vacation.

What will you do?

The Senior Data Analyst will work closely with data engineers, data analysts, and stakeholders in Group Benefits for end-to-end delivery of analysis including project intake, design, analysis, development, and implementation. This work includes:

Stakeholder management:

  • Interact with stakeholders to understand the requirements, communicate, and brainstorm solutions
  • Communicate with cross-functional stakeholders and lead meetings to understand the requirements for the project and periodically update the stakeholders in Group Benefits on the progress
  • Reformulate highly technical information into concise, understandable terms for presentations
  • Provide ongoing support to clients to enable adoption of analytical solutions and uncover enhancement opportunities

Data analysis:

  • Help structure the analytical approach and offer insights to solve the business problem
  • Work with data, including managing large number of data sources, analyzing data quality, and proactively working with Business and IT teams to resolve issues
  • Use variety of analytical tools (SQL, Python) and techniques (e.g. simulation modeling, regression, decision trees, etc.) to carry out analysis and drive conclusions
  • Enable visual storytelling through Tableau and visual analytics tools
  • Automate reporting, enable self-serve analytics, and promote the culture of analytics-driven decision making

What will you need to succeed?

  • Minimum undergraduate degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent
  • 3+ years of experience working with data and analytics delivery (i.e., quantitative analysis experience, including handling, manipulating, and analyzing data, hypothesis testing, data modelling and data visualization)
  • 3+ years of experience with SQL. Comfortable writing accurate, efficient, but complex SQL queries to extract and integrate data from multiple database sources.
  • Hands-on exposure to visualization tools especially Tableau
  • Experience using oral and written storytelling to share data driven insights in a clear, succinct manner
  • Strong partnering approach with a commitment to meeting business partners' unique needs and expectations.
  • Prioritization and planning skills to stay within time/scope of a task in a fast-paced environment
  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada or worldwide.

Unique Requirements

  • The candidate selected for this role is required to attain Canadian Reliability Security Clearance (administered by submitting fingerprints to the RCMP, who then conduct min. 5 year history checks)

Additional Assets

  • 2+ years of experience in Data visualization / dashboarding with Tableau or equivalent
  • Experience of working with AWS data toolsets (e.g.: Athena, Glue, SageMaker etc.) and knowledge of using Python/PySpark
  • Statistical analysis and modeling with Python/R
  • Experience working in agile teams
  • Experience in Group Benefits and Insurance or Financial Services Industry
  • Fluent in English and French

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
