Job summary

Affir is a remote-first company seeking a senior backend engineer to build out the lifecycle-orchestrator service at the heart of multiple connected systems. You will scale the platform, modernize legacy components, and improve availability through architectural simplification.

The role requires 5+ years of backend experience with Java/Kotlin, AWS, gRPC, and data modeling expertise, plus strong communication skills for async work and ADRs.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience as a backend software engineer.
• Strong understanding of Domain-Driven Design, distributed systems, and how architectural decisions affect performance and maintainability.
• Proficiency with data models, API design (http and RPC), state machines, event-driven architecture, and database design.
• Excellent communication skills, including asynchronous tech specs, ADRs and project plans.

Responsibilities

• Design & expand the backbone of our platform to scale to hundreds of thousands of merchants worldwide.
• Collaborate with other teams to deliver cross-team projects.
• Mentor other engineers to support growth.
• Partner with Engineering Manager to drive long-term team vision.
• Execute technical strategy for broad or complex requirements beyond the team.
• Use development tools to automate parts of the process.
