The Wildlife Branch of Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures is currently recruiting to fill the position of Section Manager.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be physically able to undertake the duties of the position, including conducting field work in rough terrain and on water, during all seasons and under adverse weather conditions
  • Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 driver's licence (or equivalent)
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends and overtime as required
  • Occasional overnight travel the province may be required

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Post-secondary education in natural resources management, environmental management, or biological sciences. An equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field may be accepted.
  • Experience conducting engagement and consultation and maintaining effective cooperative working relationships with resource users, Indigenous communities, and user groups and industry.
  • Excellent leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to motivate staff and lead teams through complex and challenging projects.
  • Strong financial management experience with responsibility for human and financial resources.
  • Knowledge of wildlife, ecosystem management and co-management, including knowledge of acts and regulations pertaining to wildlife management and indigenous constitutional rights in Manitoba.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong written communication skills with demonstrated ability to write scientific reports and plain language documents for a variety of internal and external audiences.
  • Strong verbal communication skills the ability to communicate technical information and give presentations to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Excellent organization and time-management skills with the ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Sound analytical and problem solving skills.

Desired:

  • Experience developing and/or reviewing wildlife management plans.
  • Experience in training or mentoring scientific and technical personnel.

Duties:

This position is responsible for leading a section that coordinates commercial and recreational wildlife management across the province. The position manages programs related to commercial wildlife allocations and policy, licensed hunting seasons and allocations, population assessment and wildlife health. Furthermore, this position provides strategic professional leadership and senior-level advice to government on sustainable wildlife management issues.
