Job description

Queen's University is currently seeking a Second Class Operating Engineer interested in working with unique equipment in a stable, team-oriented environment.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Engineer, the Second Class Operating Engineer is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the Central Heating Plant equipment and distribution piping. The plant provides essential services such as heating, humidification, kitchen operations, sterilization, domestic hot water, and emergency power via a turbine co-generation system.

The position involves a work schedule of 12-hour shifts for 14 days per month, with 8-hour maintenance shifts for two-week periods, and potential work on statutory holidays. Responsibilities include maintaining records of maintenance, water tests, and log entries.

The candidate must be in good standing with the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA).

The current salary range is $82,840 to $102,790, increasing to $90,053 to $111,742 effective July 1, 2025. The role offers night shift, Saturday, and Sunday premiums, along with benefits, pension, tuition support, childcare support, and other wellness programs. The university encourages career advancement, including pursuing Class 1 certification and other development opportunities.

Key responsibilities include monitoring and operating boilers, turbines, heat recovery steam generators, co-generation, and steam distribution systems. The role also involves inspections, preventative maintenance, establishing maintenance plans, overseeing junior staff, and making independent decisions impacting plant safety and operation.

What you will do

  • Monitor and operate boilers, turbines, and related equipment.
  • Oversee inspections and preventative maintenance.
  • Manage satellite chillers across campus.
  • Develop and coordinate maintenance plans with external stakeholders.
  • Follow energy management schedules for demand response.
  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance on steam networks.
  • Train and supervise junior staff.
  • Explain complex technical information clearly.
  • Make independent decisions affecting safety and operations.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.

Required Education

  • Two-Year Community College Diploma, with ongoing learning to stay current with technological advances.

Required Experience

  • More than 5 years of relevant experience.

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • 2nd Class Operating Engineer Certification.
  • G Driver's Licence.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check.
