Queen's University is currently seeking a Second Class Operating Engineer who is interested in working with unique equipment in a stable and team-oriented environment.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Engineer, the Second Class Operating Engineer is responsible for the safe operating of and the performance of maintenance on the Central Heating Plant equipment and distribution piping. The essential service (steam) provided by the Central Heating Plant enables the University and Kingston Health Sciences Centre to heat and humidify buildings, operate kitchens, sterilize surgical instruments and provide domestic hot water. The Central Heating Plant also provides normal and emergency power service to the University and Kingston Health Sciences Centre via a turbine co-generation system.
The current work schedule requires the Second Class Operating Engineer to work 12 hour shifts 14 days per month and 8 hour maintenance shifts for 2 week periods, with the potential requirement to work on statutory holidays dependent upon the work schedule. This position also maintains records including maintenance, water chemical tests, and log book entries.
The Second Class Operating Engineer must be in good standing with the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA).
The current base salary range is $82,840 to $102,790. As of July 1, 2025, base salary will be: $90,053 to $111,742.
This position is also eligible for Night Shift Premium: $1.10 per hour, Saturday Premium: $1.00 per hour, Sunday Premium: $2.10 per hour.

This position independently monitors and operates boilers, gas turbines, heat recovery steam generators, co-generation, steam distribution and is responsible for the care and control of the steam system and entire Central Heating Plant. This position oversees regular inspections on plant equipment. This position oversees preventative maintenance on plant equipment including cleaning, and lubricating generators, turbines, pumps, and compressors. This position establishes maintenance plans for weekly, monthly and annual tasks, including coordinating with external stakeholders, and/or third party contractors. This position oversees the work of junior staff and is responsible for leading daily operations. This position works independently and is required to make decisions that directly impact the operation and safety of the plant.
