Job summary

Tl'etinqox School in Alexis Creek, BC, invites applications for a School Counsellor (K–12) to support students’ social, emotional, and academic wellbeing within a trauma‑informed, culturally responsive framework.

You will collaborate with Elders, families, teachers and community services to develop student support plans, IEPs, and crisis interventions, integrating Tsilhqot’in culture and restorative justice practices.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in School Counselling, Counselling Psychology, or a related field.
  • A valid BC Teaching Certificate.
  • Strong understanding of First Nations cultures and ongoing impacts of systemic challenges.
  • Proficiency in trauma-informed care, restorative justice, and strength-based practices.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Responsibilities

  • Provide social, emotional, and academic guidance to students and small groups.
  • Integrate restorative justice and Tsilhqot’in culture into student support strategies with Elders and Cultural Advisors.
  • Respond to student crises using trauma-informed approaches and wellness protocols.
  • Collaborate with teachers, educational assistants, and community health services to create student support plans and IEPs/safety plans.
  • Coach staff in conflict resolution and social-emotional learning.
  • Build strong relationships with families and participate in school/community events.

About Our School & Community

Located in the beautiful Tsilhqot’in Territory of BC’s Cariboo Region, Tl’etinqox School is a vibrant K–12 school serving approximately 75 students. Our school is deeply rooted in the culture, language, and traditions of Tsilhqot’in. We are looking for a compassionate, relationship-focused School Counsellor who is eager to support our youth, collaborate with local Elders and community leaders, and make a meaningful difference both inside and outside the classroom.

Position Summary

As our School Counsellor, you will play a central role in fostering a safe, caring, and culturally responsive environment where every student can thrive emotionally, socially, and academically. You will provide holistic, trauma-informed counselling, support crisis intervention, and collaborate closely with families, staff, and local community service teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide social, emotional, and academic guidance to individual students and small groups.
  • Integrate restorative justice practices, local culture, values, and community-based healing practices into student support strategies in collaboration with Elders and Cultural Advisors.
  • Respond effectively to student crisis situations using trauma-informed approaches and wellness protocols.
  • Work alongside teachers, educational assistants, and community health services to create student support plans and IEPs/safety plans.
  • Coach and support staff in developing and applying skills in conflict resolution, social-emotional learning, and other areas where needed
  • Build strong, respectful relationships with families and participate in school and community events.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Master’s Degree in School Counselling, Counselling Psychology, or a related field.
  • A valid BC Teaching Certificate.
  • A Strong understanding of First Nations cultures, histories, and ongoing impacts of systemic challenges. Prior experience working in an Indigenous or rural educational setting is a strong asset.
  • Proficiency in trauma-informed care, restorative justice, and strength-based practices.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
