Job summary

Vancouver Society of Children's Centers (VSOCC) seeks a School Age Educator for an after-school program in Vancouver. The role involves guiding children aged 5–12, planning engaging activities, and maintaining a safe, nurturing environment.

The permanent part-time position is 4 hours daily (2:00-6:00pm) with extra hours during school breaks and professional development days. Unionized with BCGEU; benefits and growth opportunities offered.

Qualifications

  • Completed grade 12 and be at least 19 years of age.
  • Course or combination of courses, at least 20 hours, in child development, guidance, health and safety or nutrition.
  • Post-secondary training in social work, recreation, education, arts or related fields preferred.
  • First Aid and Food Safe training and certification.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement and evaluate activities and experiences to meet the needs of children and families in an out-of-school program.
  • Develop programming focusing on education, recreation, leadership, arts, sports, environmental awareness, and civic engagement.
  • Guide and care for children aged 5 to 12.
  • Encourage learning and positive self-concepts.
  • Ensure a healthy and safe environment for children and families.
  • Maintain positive relationships with parents and teachers.
  • Work cooperatively as a team and communicate effectively.

Education

Grade 12 completed
20 hours of coursework in child development/health and safety/nutrition
Post-secondary training in social work, recreation, education, arts or related fields preferred
First Aid and Food Safe training

Reports to:

The School Age Educator reports to the Program Supervisor.

You will have strengths in:
  • Planning, implementing and evaluating activities and experiences to meet individual and group needs of all children and families in an out of school program.
  • Planning and implementing programming that focuses on education, recreation, leadership, fine arts, sports, environmental awareness, and civic engagement.
  • Guiding and caring for a group of children ages 5 years to 12 years.
  • Encouraging learning and developing positive self-concepts for children.
  • Ensuring a healthy and safe environment for children and their families
  • Effective and cooperative teamwork and communication.
  • Maintaining positive and supportive relationships with parents and teachers.
You will have:
  • Completed grade 12 and be at least 19 years of age.
  • Completed a course or a combination of courses, of at least 20 hours' duration in child development, guidance, health and safety or nutrition.
  • Post-secondary training in social work, recreation, education, arts or related fields preferred
  • First Aid and Food Safe training and certification
  • Minimum six months' experience working in a similar environment
  • Experience working with a variety of cultures and family dynamics
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication
  • Excellent teaching skills
  • Strong knowledge and skills in planning and implementing activities for school age children
Your additional assets may include:
  • School Age Child Care and/or ECE certification
  • A second language
Terms of Employment:
  • Salary: $26.15 per hour plus employer-paid health and welfare benefits.
  • Permanent part-time position: 4 hours/day (2:00-6:00pm) plus additional hours when applicable during school year; 7.5 hours/day during Summer, Winter and Spring breaks and on Professional Development day
