Job description

JELD-WEN is currently seeking a Safety Manager to join our growing team.

Position Summary: The Plant Safety Manager will lead the site environmental, health and safety initiatives. They will assist site leadership with establishing site specific policies and standards to ensure compliance with regulatory and JELD-WEN Global EHS requirements, prevent injuries and illnesses, reduce workers’ compensation costs, and help create a strong EHS culture.

Job Description:

  • Further development and implementation of the organization’s existing Safety Program, including assisting in the development of Safety performance metrics in alignment with the corporate core values.
  • Develop and/or aid in the development and implementation of policies and operating procedures to minimize accidents and related costs and comply with legislation.
  • Manage WCB claims, Return to Work Program, claims appeal and claim costs.
  • Knowledgeably coordinates the attainment of medical information from physicians and WCB to accurately determine an employee's ability to return to work.
  • Oversee the design and delivery of training programs for workers, management, and Safety Committee members to comply with legislative requirements.
  • Track safety performance, identify areas of weakness and set and measure results against goals.
  • Prepare business and action plans that support company strategies.
  • Reduce the incidence of, and ensure compliance with any orders from legislative authorities.
  • Audit the compliance to company safety policies and procedures and take necessary steps to remedy areas of non-compliance in cooperation with management.
  • Administration of Safety program, including document control, monitoring, and maintenance of Safety records.
  • Undertaking site safety inspections.
  • Conducting environmental, health and safety inspections in the workplace.
  • Training site employees on environmental, health & safety advice to all employees.
  • Managing emergency procedures.
  • Tracking environmental, health and safety inspections and audit findings to closure.
  • Reporting injuries, illnesses and near misses to the corporate environmental, health and safety department and business leaders.

Qualifications:

  • Certification in Health and Safety and significant knowledge of Health, Safety and WCB related legislation in Manitoba.
  • OHS Certificate, CRSP designation or equivalent (or actively pursuing designation).
  • Preferred 5 years experience in Health, Safety and Workers Compensation role in a manufacturing environment, with a verifiable track record of program success in a management position with increasing responsibility in health and safety.
  • Familiar with the principles and practices of accident prevention and ergonomics, and you bring knowledge of anatomy, physiology, health assessment and surveillance, emergency care, and health and safety promotion.
  • Certification with Basic Trauma and CPR.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organization and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of business and plant processes.
  • Ability to prepare and sell business cases for proposed projects.
  • Some science aptitude – chemicals, TLVs, Industrial Hygiene testing.
  • Leader and Manager skills – department and project team management.
  • Significant skills required to accomplish goals through people who do not report to this position.
  • Ability to evaluate risk, controls needed and balance risk against cost of controls.
  • Ability to design and evaluate effective training programs.
  • Considerable tact and discretion required in dealing with employees, managers and external enforcement authorities on safety issues.
