This is a full-time, 14-month in-office contract role with the potential to transition to a permanent position, subject to performance and business needs.
Job Purpose:
This role is responsible for leading and supporting all safety and regulatory functions within the organization. The successful candidate will have a solid background in transportation safety, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently. We are looking for a proactive leader who is passionate about promoting a safety-first culture and committed to ensuring compliance across the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Partner with the Compliance and HR teams to foster a strong safety culture.
- Communicate safety updates and information regularly to all stakeholders.
- Stay informed of legislative changes related to transportation safety and compliance.
- Manage all safety-related incidents, ensuring procedures are followed and documentation is accurate and complete.
- Act as the primary liaison with insurance providers for accident and claim management.
- Report and follow up with drivers on violations, tickets, accidents, injuries, and incidents.
- Support the driver hiring process by verifying qualifications against regulatory and company standards.
- Review DVIRs (Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports) and ELD (Electronic Logging Device) data for compliance; escalate issues as necessary.
- Serve as the subject matter expert on safety and regulatory compliance.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, exceeding minimum standards where possible.
- Maintain and update all transportation permits and licenses for both Canadian and U.S. operations.
- Conduct annual reviews of driver abstracts and CVORs (Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration).
- Monitor and analyze driver performance to identify areas for improvement.
- Maintain accurate records related to safety and compliance; apply progressive discipline where required.
- Participate in IRP (International Registration Plan) renewals and vehicle licensing.
- Create and maintain Truck Operating Authority Binders.
- Administer DTOPS, A30, and bridge cards.
- Conduct regular safety audits to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Collaborate with other departments to support shared goals and operational efficiency.
- Approve expenses related to safety and compliance.
- Support additional safety and compliance initiatives as needed.
Qualifications:
- Degree or diploma in Business or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in transportation safety and compliance.
- Strong knowledge of Hours of Service, MTO, and DOT regulations.
- Proven experience conducting incident investigations and determining root causes.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
- High attention to detail and strong problem-solving capabilities.
- Proficient in English (reading, writing, and speaking).
- Strong computer skills, including MS Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Border Connect, and telematics systems.
- Well-organized and able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
