An established industry player is seeking a proactive Safety & Compliance Specialist to lead safety initiatives and ensure regulatory compliance. Qualifications

This is a full-time, 14-month in-office contract role with the potential to transition to a permanent position, subject to performance and business needs.

Job Purpose:

This role is responsible for leading and supporting all safety and regulatory functions within the organization. The successful candidate will have a solid background in transportation safety, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently. We are looking for a proactive leader who is passionate about promoting a safety-first culture and committed to ensuring compliance across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Partner with the Compliance and HR teams to foster a strong safety culture.
  2. Communicate safety updates and information regularly to all stakeholders.
  3. Stay informed of legislative changes related to transportation safety and compliance.
  4. Manage all safety-related incidents, ensuring procedures are followed and documentation is accurate and complete.
  5. Act as the primary liaison with insurance providers for accident and claim management.
  6. Report and follow up with drivers on violations, tickets, accidents, injuries, and incidents.
  7. Support the driver hiring process by verifying qualifications against regulatory and company standards.
  8. Review DVIRs (Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports) and ELD (Electronic Logging Device) data for compliance; escalate issues as necessary.
  9. Serve as the subject matter expert on safety and regulatory compliance.
  10. Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, exceeding minimum standards where possible.
  11. Maintain and update all transportation permits and licenses for both Canadian and U.S. operations.
  12. Conduct annual reviews of driver abstracts and CVORs (Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration).
  13. Monitor and analyze driver performance to identify areas for improvement.
  14. Maintain accurate records related to safety and compliance; apply progressive discipline where required.
  15. Participate in IRP (International Registration Plan) renewals and vehicle licensing.
  16. Create and maintain Truck Operating Authority Binders.
  17. Administer DTOPS, A30, and bridge cards.
  18. Conduct regular safety audits to ensure ongoing compliance.
  19. Collaborate with other departments to support shared goals and operational efficiency.
  20. Approve expenses related to safety and compliance.
  21. Support additional safety and compliance initiatives as needed.
Qualifications:
  1. Degree or diploma in Business or a related field preferred.
  2. Minimum 3 years of experience in transportation safety and compliance.
  3. Strong knowledge of Hours of Service, MTO, and DOT regulations.
  4. Proven experience conducting incident investigations and determining root causes.
  5. Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
  6. High attention to detail and strong problem-solving capabilities.
  7. Proficient in English (reading, writing, and speaking).
  8. Strong computer skills, including MS Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Border Connect, and telematics systems.
  9. Well-organized and able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines.

Please note: This position is focused on Transportation Compliance, not Occupational Health & Safety.
