Job summary

Synectics Inc. is seeking a skilled Construction Estimator to support the planning and budgeting of residential construction projects in Edmonton, Canada. The role involves preparing accurate cost estimates, material takeoffs, and change-order management for custom homes.

The estimator will review subcontractor quotes, assess risks, and collaborate with stakeholders to ensure competitive bids and accurate pricing throughout project development.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree or diploma in Building or Construction, or related field.
• Experience in residential estimating, Alberta preferred.
• On-site construction experience is an asset.
• Strong reading of building specs and blueprints.
• Excellent organizational and analytical abilities.

Responsibilities

• Estimate, procure, and audit full cost budgets for custom homes.
• Produce accurate cost estimates for projects at various stages of development.
• Prepare quantity and material takeoffs.
• Estimate labor and equipment costs based on proposals, plans, estimates, and specifications.
• Review final change orders and interior selection packages for accuracy and completeness.
• Review requests for customized price quotes based on adjustments to standard plans, specifications, and options.
• Create, track, follow up, and ensure fluid processing of change orders.
• Coordinate change orders among multiple internal and external stakeholders.
• Create and adjust model assemblies in estimating software as required.
• Value engineer existing products.
• Identify and mitigate risks in project scopes, building specifications, vendor management, and market concerns.
• Obtain and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes.
• Track historical cost data and update pricing models.
• Prepare and report on performance metrics, including cost analysis.
• Assist in bid preparation, proposal development, and contract negotiations.
• Stay updated on industry trends and market rates for labor and materials.
• Perform other related estimating duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Completed post-secondary degree or diploma in Building, Construction Management, Architectural Technologies, or related academic field of study comparable to Canadian academic standards preferred.


• Five (5) or more years of estimating experience for residential construction in Alberta.


• On-site construction experience is an asset.


• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required.


• Working knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics is an asset.


• Ability to read and interpret building specifications and blueprints is required.


• Strong organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills with an emphasis on attention to detail.
