The Resident Care Assistant is an unregulated health care provider responsible for closely observing patients whose behaviors pose a risk to their safety or the safety of others. Passionate about person-centered care, the observer engages in restorative care and assists with activities of daily living for the patient/resident they are observing.

Working under the supervision of registered health care professionals, such as the Unit’s Patient Care Manager or their designate, the patients may be elderly with dementia or young patients who have experienced traumatic injuries, including motor vehicle collisions, assaults, falls, or self-harm attempts.

Summary of Duties

  1. Observe assigned patients to support a safe and caring environment.
  2. Ensure safety during violent outbursts of residents.
  3. Provide 1:1 compassionate supervision for residents with conditions like Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Frontal Brain Injury, Schizophrenia, Stroke, etc.
  4. Supervise residents at risk of elopement or suicide, including those with uncontrolled behaviors, for both long and short-term.
  5. Engage residents in meaningful activities such as reading, storytelling, or looking through photo albums.
  6. Maintain close proximity to residents during supervision, following them to activities and staying within sight.
  7. Complete documentation like Dementia Observations Scale (DOS) and Behaviour Assessment Record (BAR) as required.
  8. Notify a registered health professional immediately if there is danger, a resident goes missing, or if there are significant behavioral or condition changes.
  9. Interact with residents to provide comfort and engage in cognitively stimulating activities.
  10. Maintain a professional image, including wearing a clearly legible name tag.
  11. Assist with activities of daily living under supervision of health professionals.
  12. Communicate observations to the healthcare team for care planning.
  13. Complete all required documentation per policy.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned, such as high-touch cleaning or filling masks.

Qualifications/Skills

  1. Minimum Grade 11 or equivalent education recognized by the Ministry of Education, Ontario.
  2. At least one year of recent experience in patient care or a related setting, or a PSW certificate, or completion of one year of an accredited Nursing program.
  3. Fluent in English, both spoken and written.
  4. Recent accredited Personal Support Worker certificate is an asset.
  5. Experience in patient-focused care and teamwork.
  6. Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
  7. Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
  8. Proof of immunizations for MMRV, diphtheria, pertussis, hepatitis B.
  9. Negative 2-step TB skin test within past year or recent chest x-ray.
  10. Willingness to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Police Check.
