Position Summary:

Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare is seeking nursing students to join our Enhanced Extern Program. This employment opportunity allows students to work in a clinical environment, developing competencies to transition into a registered role upon graduation. The Clinical Extern may be considered for career opportunities after graduation and licensure.

The Clinical Extern will work as an unregulated healthcare provider, collaborating with team members and providing patient-centered care under supervision of a designated Health Professional, reporting to the unit manager. They will practice in alignment with organizational values and within the scope of their abilities as authorized by professional colleges.

Externs will be hired on a contract basis, working part-time up to full-time hours (37.5 hours/week). Scheduling will be based on unit needs and may include day, evening, night, and weekend shifts.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION

Applicants must be one of the following:

  • RN student in any year of study
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing
  • Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Successful completion of a recent clinical placement
  • Ability to communicate professionally and confidentially with patients, families, staff, physicians, students, and volunteers
  • Ability to work as part of a team and seek guidance when needed
  • Competencies to provide safe, high-quality, compassionate care aligned with education and organizational values
  • Critical thinking skills including clinical judgment, problem-solving, and evaluation skills
  • Respectful attitude and behavior towards all persons
