Job summary

Simon Fraser University is seeking a Residence & Housing technician to respond to tenant inquiries, process maintenance reports, and perform scheduled inspections of student residence buildings and equipment. The role coordinates repairs, pest control, cleaning issues, and manages work orders in SFU's Residence & Housing system.

The position requires basic building systems knowledge, 2 years of experience, and the ability to coordinate with contracted staff.

Qualifications

  • High school graduation and basic courses or training related to building systems.
  • 2 years of experience; equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable.
  • Proficiency with basic office software and building management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to inquiries in person or by email and follows up on maintenance reports.
  • Coordinates resolution of repair, pest control and cleaning issues; updates work orders and inventories in the Residence & Housing system.
  • Monitors contracted staff and coordinates relocation of moveable assets.
  • Inspects buildings and equipment and checks output of building systems (heating, air handling, plumbing, electrical, etc.).
  • Coordinates response procedures for contracted service providers including Wi‑Fi.

About the Role

Responds to inquiries, in person or via email, and follows up on tenant maintenance reports and conducts scheduled inspections of student residence buildings and equipment. Coordinates the resolution of identified repair, maintenance, pest control, and cleaning issues; maintains and updates work order, room condition and inventory information in the Residence & Housing software system; monitors the day-to-day operations of the contracted janitorial staff; and organizes and coordinates the relocation of moveable assets. Compiles inspection information; inspects general building spaces; and checks the output performance of building systems including those that are remotely monitored (i.e., heating, air handling, exhaust, plumbing, water, fire suppression, fire and intrusion, elevators, lighting, kitchen and fire suppression equipment). Acts as a resource person and coordinates response procedures for issues related to the contracted provision of services including Wi‑Fi.

Qualifications

High school graduation and general courses or training of moderate duration (one semester equivalent) related to building systems. 2 years of experience. An equivalent combination of formal education, certificate/program of study and experience is acceptable.

  • Basic knowledge and understanding of building components, systems, trends and standards.
  • Basic knowledge of performance standards and expectations for various building products (e.g., furniture and floor coverings, paint).
  • Basic knowledge of insect identification (i.e., bedbugs) and control methods.
  • 40 wpm keyboarding skill with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to identify irregularities during inspections.
  • Ability to assign and check the work of temporary support staff.
  • Ability to read basic construction drawings.
  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to use electronic mail applications (i.e., SFU Connect).
  • Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications (e.g.,Word, Excel, FileMaker Pro) at an intermediate level.
  • Ability to use an online residence management system (i.e., StarRez).
  • Ability to troubleshoot cable television and internet equipment.
  • Ability to use mobile technology (i.e., tablet computers, portable access control update equipment); to upload photos and data to housing databases; and to upload/update access control credentials.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts as necessary. Due to the nature of student housing shifts may cover extended hours or days of the week.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment and materials weighing up to 25 kg.
  • Ability to travel throughout the Residence complex (i.e., walk over a variety of terrain, climb stairs, etc.) for approximately 50% of each shift (i.e., approximately 4 hours/day).
