Job Summary

The Transformative Health & Justice Research Cluster (THJRC) is looking for a highly motivated and organized Research Assistant (Academic Project Coordinator) to support the THJRC project operations, grant writing, community engagement, event planning, website administration, content creation and knowledge translation.

The THJRC aims to support community members, students and early-career researchers to engage in knowledge mobilization, program and policy development, social justice action, community leadership, and interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral networking. All activities are grounded in a shared commitment to social justice, participatory methods and equity, with the ultimate goal of mobilizing academic privilege and collaborative knowledge development towards innovative, community-driven knowledge sharing and advocacy.

This position supports our community-based, participatory, and strengths-based aims to reframe the criminal justice system to improve health and justice for (and with!) peoples disproportionately affected by current systems.

Organizational Status

This position is within the Transformative Health & Justice Research Cluster (THJRC) project, which operates out of the Critical Research in Health and Health Inequities (CRiHHI), in the School of Nursing, University of British Columbia. This Research Assistant position will report to the project's co-Leads, Dr. Helen Brown (CRiHHI), Dr. Sofia Bartlett, and Dr. Lyana Patrick.

Work Performed

The Research Assistant will work closely with the THJRC Health & Justice leadership, and report to the co-Leads. Our Research Assistant is expected to contribute to the overall success of the project by providing support in:

  • Designing and implementing public facing knowledge sharing from within the THJRC aligned research projects
  • Identifies grants relevant to the THJRC members and provide support on grant applications non-profit community partners and graduate students.
  • Reviews papers and/or new protocols and provides comment in area of expertise at the request of THJRC staff
  • Researching and planning content development and activity design for THJRC Events in support of THJRC knowledge dissemination and exchange
  • Informing and ensuring alignment with THJRC community-based and participatory aims
  • Administering our web-based presence by updating content
  • Performing other related duties as required
  • Contributions to the development and expansion of the THJRC Health & Justice Learning network through engagement with Peer Leaders, Indigenous Elders, academics, and trainees.
  • Plan and implement THJRC community events and knowledge sharing and translation tactics across research studies being conducted by THRJC academics, Peers, and graduate students.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position will be monitored by the co-Leads. This research cluster project, funded by a UBC Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters (GCRC) jointly created by the Vice-President Research & Innovation and the Provost & Vice-President Academic, is offering employment opportunities to people with lived experience of incarceration. In doing so, we are addressing structural barriers to employment for this population, and transforming how we honour research involvement. This position is expected to work with efficiency and sensitivity. Along with shaping how the THJRC's research agenda and questions, the incumbent will serve as peer support in all THJRC research activities.

Errors or incorrect decisions could compromise the quality of the research, and the collegial relationships with partners and/or participants. In turn, this could result in delays in completing projects, and potentially impact the credibility of the THJRC and its investigators. Inability to exercise sound and sensitive judgement could diminish the THJRC's (and its team's) ability to attract the support of the scientific community and/or lead to poor public/private sector relationships and partnerships. This work must be completed at a high level of consideration, reflexivity, and professionalism.

This position will be responsible for access, collection, use and disclosure of personal information in accordance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996) and other UBC privacy and security policies. This position requires employees to work under strict confidentiality requirements; internal procedures and policies to protect personal information must be followed and adherence to these requirements will be regularly reviewed by the employer.

Supervision Received

Will receive supervision by the THJRC co-Leads.
