Job description

Description

The Department of Radiology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Termposition is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator for the Bone Imaging Lab.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Under general supervision and direction of the PI, operationalize, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Work with PI to develop ideas and support for writing grant proposals and scientific publications as required
  • Responsible for overseeing subject recruitment, coordinating with recruitment sites/partners, and scheduling and scientific measurements
  • Ensures subjects fill-out consent forms, questionnaires and to undergo measurement (HR-pQCT scanning, DXA scanning, blood draws, anthropometric data, and possibly other measurements yet to be determined)
  • Supports staff and trainees to ensure the highest quality of data collected from research study participants (i.e., HR-pQCT, DXA, questionnaires, etc.) and quality of data analysis
  • Ensure data is securely stored in a database, and that it can be retrieved for analysis in a consistent and organized fashion (files, tapes, disk usage)
  • Assist in all aspects of study ethics applications and updates as required, and mentors trainees in the development of new protocols
  • Keep lab health & safety regulations current for the lab, in accordance with UofC and federal regulations
  • Demonstrates strong communication, team and customer service skills, and ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Interact with collaborating research groups who may require support to acquire or analyze imaging data or similar
  • Developing, writing and maintaining lab standard operating procedures (SOP), and coordinating with other members to collect and organize
  • Ensures the lab is properly stocked of lab supplies, computers, tools as per the requirements of all staff and trainees
  • Troubleshoots any issues related to equipment in the lab, including performing maintenance. Refers complex issues to technical experts
  • Interact with IT professionals as required for support of lab computing hardware

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Minimum Bachelor degree in Engineering, ideally Biomedical Engineering, or a related field required. Graduate degree (MSc or PhD) preferred
  • Minimum of five years of experience in conducting scientific research, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Fundamental understanding of all measurements conducted for the study and of the equipment used for collecting data
  • Strong IT and computer skills for data management and running custom software
  • Proficient in skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Experience in research related to musculoskeletal health and/or medical imaging is an asset
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Communicating with study participants/stakeholders/project managers/coordinators
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong knowledge of ethical issues and confidentiality policies
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and accurately perform work
  • WHIMIS Certification (can be obtained on the job)
  • Excellent problem solving skills an asset
