Job summary

Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a Rehabilitation Assistant for the Rehabilitation and Supportive Care Services in Halifax. You will support therapists, educate patients to promote movement and function, and help with equipment and supplies in the 9-Lane Abby J Lane Building and V3 East areas.

You will work as part of a patient care team, with responsibilities including safety, documentation, and collaboration with care partners.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a recognized Rehabilitation Assistant program or combined OTA/PTA program.
  • Current BCLS training or requirement to complete within 3 months of employment.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology is an asset.
  • Experience working with varied patient populations is an asset.
  • Competencies in other languages (French) are an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assist therapists with delivery of activities, interventions, and education.
  • Ensure safety and proper technique during patient activities.
  • Check and clean equipment; maintain treatment and storage areas; order supplies as needed.

About the Opportunity

The Rehabilitation Assistant works under the direction of the Manager, and supervision of the Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist. The Rehabilitation Assistant works as an active member of the patient care team, with individuals, care partners and groups to help educate and promote movement, occupation, and function. Working collaboratively with their team, the Rehabilitation Assistant is responsible for the safe and proficient delivery of activities, interventions, and education that have been assigned by the therapists for patients/clients experiencing limitations in movement and daily function. The Rehabilitation Assistant also checks and cleans equipment, maintains treatment and storage areas and may order necessary supplies.

Services provided will be assigned based on clinical needs between the units of 9-Lane, Abby J Lane Building (Palliative Care) and V3 East (Orthopedic Geriatric Rehab/Acute Care for the Elderly) in the Veterans Memorial Building. Familiarity with patient populations and needs are preferred.

The successful applicant may be required to provide services anywhere within the Rehabilitation Services portfolio.

About You
  • Graduation from a recognized Community College Rehabilitation Assistant program OR Completion of a recognized combined Occupational Therapy (OTA) and Physiotherapy Assistant (PTA) College programs required.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) training or requirement to complete training within first three (3) months of employment.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology an asset.
  • Experience working with varied patient populations considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of proper body mechanics required.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to complete assigned work.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with team members, patients and their care partners.
  • Previous experience working with Geriatric populations an asset.
  • Previous experience working with Frailty and Dementia an asset.
  • Previous experience working with patients/clients with physical and/or cognitive impairments an asset.
  • Previous experience with wheelchair fitting and modifications an asset.
  • Experience providing active and passive range of motion and exercise programs.
  • Experience with transfer training.
  • Competencies in other languages considered an asset, French preferred.

Hours
  • Permanent full-time position; 75 hours biweekly
  • Shifts may include days, weekends, and holidays
Compensation and Benefits

$25.84 - $30.85 Hourly
