Job summary

Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a Rehabilitation Assistant to join the Rehabilitation and Supportive Care Services team. The role supports therapists by delivering movement, occupation, and functional activities to patients, with responsibilities including equipment checks and supply ordering.

The position spans multiple units and requires collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

• Graduation from a recognized Community College Rehabilitation Assistant program OR Completion of a recognized combined Occupational Therapy (OTA) and Physiotherapy Assistant (PTA) College programs required.
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) training or requirement to complete training within first three months of employment.
• Basic computer skills required; knowledge of Medical Terminology is an asset.
• Experience with varied patient populations, geriatric populations, frailty or dementia is an asset.
• Knowledge of proper body mechanics; ability to transfer patients and perform ROM/exercise programs.

Responsibilities

• Assist therapists with movement, occupation and function activities as directed.
• Deliver activities, interventions, and education to patients/clients.
• Check and clean equipment; maintain treatment and storage areas; order supplies as needed.
• Provide services across units within the Rehabilitation Services portfolio (9-Lane Abby Lane Building and V3 East).
• Collaborate with team members, patients and care partners to promote movement and function.

About the Opportunity

The Rehabilitation Assistant works under the direction of the Manager, and supervision of the Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist. The Rehabilitation Assistant works as an active member of the patient care team, with individuals, care partners and groups to help educate and promote movement, occupation, and function. Working collaboratively with their team, the Rehabilitation Assistant is responsible for the safe and proficient delivery of activities, interventions, and education that have been assigned by the therapists for patients/clients experiencing limitations in movement and daily function. The Rehabilitation Assistant also checks and cleans equipment, maintains treatment and storage areas and may order necessary supplies.

Services provided will be assigned based on clinical needs between the units of 9-Lane, Abby J Lane Building (Palliative Care) and V3 East (Orthopedic Geriatric Rehab/Acute Care for the Elderly) in the Veterans Memorial Building. Familiarity with patient populations and needs are preferred.

The successful applicant may be required to provide services anywhere within the Rehabilitation Services portfolio.

About You

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with team members, patients and their care partners.
• Previous experience working with Geriatric populations an asset.
• Previous experience working with Frailty and Dementia an asset.
• Previous experience working with patients/clients with physical and/or cognitive impairments an asset.
• Previous experience with wheelchair fitting and modifications an asset.
• Experience providing active and passive range of motion and exercise programs.
• Experience with transfer training.
• Competencies in other languages considered an asset, French preferred.

Hours

• Permanent full-time position; 75 hours biweekly

Compensation and Benefits

$25.84 - $30.85 Hourly
