Job summary

The Occupational Therapist at Nova Scotia Health Authority provides consult, assessment, treatment and follow-up to patients in inpatient, home or community settings within Rehabilitation & Supportive Care Services. You will work with clients, families and caregivers to restore and maintain function in self-care, productivity and leisure, under the supervision of the Program Manager.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a CAOT recognized School of Occupational Therapy
• Licensure with the provincial regulatory body, NSOTR
• Current BCLS certification
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to educate patients/families and collaborate with the care team

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with clients, caregivers and families to restore and/or maintain function in self-care, productivity and leisure.
• Provide assessment, treatment, evaluation and follow-up in hospital, home and community settings.
• Develop individualized treatment plans and manage a busy caseload with clinical judgment.
• Educate and support clients, families and caregivers.
• Contribute to inter-professional practice and supervise OT Assistants where applicable.

About the Opportunity

The Occupational Therapist works under the supervision of the Program Manager of Rehabilitation & Supportive Care Services. The Occupational Therapist (OT) works in collaboration with the client, caregivers and family to facilitate, restore and/or maintain the patient/clients optimal level of function in the areas of self-care, productivity and leisure. The OT provides consultation, assessment, treatment, evaluation and follow-up while working within the hospital, the client's home and/or their community. The OT, in collaboration with the client, establishes individualized treatment plans and goals independently manage a busy caseload and use clinical judgement and decision-making skills to prioritize issues on a daily basis. The OT provides education and support to clients, families and caregivers. The OT functions as both a member of an occupational therapy clinical team and a multidisciplinary hospital and/or community healthcare team. The OT contributes to the clinical education of OT students and related health disciplines and for supervision of OT Assistants. The OT is responsible for adhering to the Nova Scotia Health policies and procedures and to the professional standards of their licensing body, the Nova Scotia Occupational Therapy Regulator (NSOTR).

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

• Graduate of a C.A.O.T recognized School of Occupational Therapy
• Licensure with the provincial regulatory body, the Nova Scotia Occupational Therapy Regulator (NSOTR)
• Previous experience in acute inpatient hospital care considered an asset
• Previous experience working with burns, plastics and orthopedic patient populations considered an asset
• Previous experience in custom splinting and fabrication considered an asset
• Previous experience working in a critical care setting considered an asset
• Ability to help develop, establish and integrate the role of OT in an inter-professional practice setting
• Current BCLS certification
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to facilitate education programs and interact positively with patients/clients, families, other health care providers and staff
• Commitment to promoting a culture of respect that supports safety, ethical practices, cultural awareness and organizational health
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, while effectively planning, organizing, and supervising
• Ability to be flexible and adjust to the changing needs of the service and the program/facility
• Must be able to work alone or with team members in all service settings
• Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
