Job summary

Douglas College’s English Department in the Faculty of Language, Literature and Performing Arts seeks instructors to teach first- and second-year literature and academic writing, including QTT courses. Successful candidates will use flexible teaching methods and contribute to curriculum development.

We offer up to three probationary regular instructors and contract instructors, with January 4, 2027 start dates, Winter/Summer 2027 rotations, and hybrid work arrangements for eligible positions.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in English Literature or equivalent (Ph.D. preferred).
• Two or more years of experience teaching post-secondary credit courses in academic writing and literature.
• Ability to work collaboratively; excellent communication, initiative and self-direction.
• Evidence of ongoing professional development.
• Experience with Indigenous literatures and pedagogies; gender, sexuality and women’s studies; children’s literature; world literatures is an asset.

Job description

$71,846 – $115,129 annually. Salary scale and wage increments are in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

The English Department offers a wide range of first- and second-year university transfer courses in Literature and Academic Writing. We are seeking excellent English instructors with a passion for their own research area and a proven record of inspiring and motivating students. Successful candidates will demonstrate flexible and innovative teaching strategies. We particularly welcome applicants with a specialization in Indigenous literatures and pedagogies, gender, sexualities and women’s studies, children’s literature, or world literatures.

The English Department in the Faculty of Language, Literature and Performing Arts is seeking to hire three (3) probationary regular instructors and expand its list of contract instructors qualified to teach ( QTT ) courses in academic writing and literature.

As an instructor in the English Department, you will

• Develop course outlines following curriculum guidelines;
• Select appropriate textbooks and create teaching materials;
• Deliver high-quality learner-centred instruction;
• Design assignments and assessment criteria;
• Hold regular office hours; and
• Maintain currency in the field through regular professional development.

In addition, as a probationary regular instructor, you will

• Participate in curriculum revisions and development;
• Attend departmental and Faculty-wide meetings; and
• Participate in department and Faculty-wide committees.

The successful candidates will have

• A minimum of a Master’s degree in English Literature or equivalent (Ph.D. preferred);
• A minimum of 2 years’ experience teaching post-secondary credit courses in both academic writing and literature;
• The ability to work collaboratively with others, excellent communication skills, demonstrated initiative, and self-directedness;
• Evidence of ongoing professional development;
• Experience with content and pedagogical approaches in one or more of the following specializations would be considered an asset:
  • Indigenous literatures and pedagogies;
  • Gender, sexualities, and women’s studies;
  • Children’s literature;
  • World literatures.

Additional Information

The English Department in the Faculty of Language, Literature and Performing Arts is seeking to hire up to three (3) probationary regular instructors and expand its list of contract instructors qualified to teach ( QTT ) courses in academic writing and literature.

There are up to three (3) probationary regular instructor positions available, starting on January 4, 2027. We anticipate being able to offer one full-time position (8 sections) and two part-time positions (4 and 5 sections respectively). The teaching rotations for these positions will be in Winter and Summer 2027.

There may be top-up and contract sections available for Fall 2027.

Please note that this is not an EAP or ESL teaching position.

Workload is assigned each year based on available sections.
