Job summary

Northern Health is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to join the Northern Emergency Response Team (NERT) and Virtual Support Nurse program at University Hospital of Northern BC in Prince George, BC. This role combines hands-on critical care with inter-facility transfers and virtual support for rural EDs.

You will work under the patient- and family-centered care model, providing leadership, clinical guidance, and collaboration across the Emergency Department, ICU, and regional teams.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an approved School of Nursing.
• Current BCCNM practicing registration.
• ACLS certification and TNCC/EPICC or equivalent.
• CTAS, PEARS, and PALS certifications.
• Valid BC Driver's Licence.
• Minimum five years’ recent critical care experience including inter-facility transfers.

Responsibilities

• Perform inter-facility transfers with BCEHS paramedics.
• Provide real-time clinical guidance and mentorship to rural ED nurses via virtual network.
• Support Emergency Department, ICU, and hospital teams when not transferring patients.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care across settings.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver evidence-based care.
• Utilize advanced communication/IT to support clinical decision-making and outcomes.

About the Role

Reporting to the Program Lead and working within Northern Health's patient and family‑centered care model, the NERT and Virtual Support Nurse plays a critical role in supporting access to specialized care throughout Northern BC.

Key responsibilities include:

• Performing inter‑facility patient transfers alongside BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) paramedics.
• Providing real‑time clinical guidance and mentorship to nurses in rural emergency departments through an established virtual support network.
• Supporting the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, and hospital‑based healthcare teams at UHNBC when not engaged in patient transfers.
• Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care across diverse clinical settings.
• Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to provide safe, evidence‑informed care for critically ill and injured patients.
• Using advanced communication and information technologies to support clinical decision‑making and patient outcomes across Northern BC.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing.
• Current practicing registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
• Accredited Critical Care training/certification and a minimum of five years' recent experience caring for critically ill or injured patients, including inter‑facility patient transfers, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Current certification in:
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) or EPICC Trauma and Pediatrics
• Canadian Triage Acuity Scale (CTAS)
• Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
• Valid BC Driver's Licence.
