Job summary

Recovery Alberta is seeking a Registered Nurse with a focus on acute psychiatric in-patient care at Rockyview General Hospital. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to assess, de-escalate, and manage care for patients with complex mental health needs and assist in discharge planning.

This role involves group sessions, coordination with medical staff, and adherence to CRNA registration and BCLS-HCP guidelines, in a dynamic Calgary environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, ensuring safety and well-being.
• Conduct physical and mental status assessments; de-escalation; discharge planning.
• Deliver group content to patients; support care for patients receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and assist in pre/post treatment assessment and monitoring.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary team to develop and adjust plans of care as patient needs evolve.
• Contribute to medical emergencies awareness and escalation as required.

Job description

As a dedicated Registered Nurse / Registered Psychiatric Nurse at Rockyview general hospital on unit 45 you have a pivotal role as an integral member of our multidisciplinary healthcare team. Focused on in-patient acute psychiatric nursing, you will engage in collaborative efforts to provide holistic and comprehensive care, addressing the diverse needs of individuals, families, and communities. In this position, you will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to develop a robust plan of care to stabilize patients suffering from acute psychiatric illness. Your responsibilities include delivering targeted interventions, with an awareness of evaluation to modify approaches based on evolving patient needs. Your scope of practice will encompass physical and mental status assessments, de-escalation, and conflict-resolution. Additionally, you will engage in discharge planning that promotes, maintains, and restores mental health, while preventing mental illness injury, and disability. In this role, you will also be responsible for facilitating and delivering applicable group content to the patients. You may also support in the care of patients receiving Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) treatment, ensuring patients are informed and assist in the pre and post treatment assessment and monitoring. Your communication skills will be instrumental in effectively engaging with other departments, services, and clients, ensuring the seamless provision of high-quality care. This collective approach is fundamental to promoting recovery and wellness.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program.Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Knowledge of verbal de-escalation techniques is required. A working knowledge of psychotropic medications is also required. Experience in AMH assessment tools, including but not limited to the Mental Status Examination, is expected, as well as experience in various risk assessments, i.e., suicide risk, homicidal risk, and violent risk. Candidates should have six months of addictions and mental health experience within the last three years. New graduates who have completed a final preceptorship in an Addiction and Mental Health site may be considered. Criteria for a successful preceptorship can vary and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Additionally, candidates must be familiar with the expectations of medical capabilities within mental health, and be able to provide treatment as directed, assess potential difficulties, and respond to medical emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications:

Within the last 5 years, 1-3 years proven skills and experience in psychiatric, medical assessment and crisis intervention. Recent nursing experience in an acute in-patient psychiatric setting is preferred.
