Job summary

Recovery Alberta is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) to provide care to children and adolescents in a Regularized Relief role across five CYFAMH programs at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

You will perform comprehensive assessments, develop care plans, administer medications, and engage in crisis intervention within an interdisciplinary team, advocating for patient- and family-centered care while supporting transitions

Job description

An exciting opportunity awaits a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) who is passionate about working with children and adolescents. This Regularized Relief position within the Children, Youth & Family Addiction & Mental Health (CYFAMH) program is a Regularized Relief role requiring flexibility to work across five programs at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The RN/RPN provides safe, ethical and evidence-informed nursing care to pediatric and adolescent patients. Responsibilities include comprehensive assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation using the Integrated Plan of Care (IPoC). Key duties include crisis intervention, de-escalation, mental health assessment, medication administration, and treatment- and diagnostic-related nursing care. Reporting to the Care Manager and working within an interdisciplinary team, the RN/RPN collaborates with patients and families to support patient- and family-centered care. Other responsibilities include participating in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives; supporting transitions in care; facilitating access to treatment services; advocating for children and youth across care settings including schools and providing education regarding mental health conditions, medications, resources, and funding supports. The RN/RPN contributes to collaborative care planning, triage activities and initiatives that promote, maintain and improve quality and safety for patients, families and caregivers, supporting optimal outcomes. The incumbent will demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, reliability, and strong collaboration skills. Note: This position requires flexibility to work the assigned rotation and provide coverage for vacation, education leave, and other staffing needs across the five CYFAMH Tertiary Service programs at the GRH and RAH.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Psychiatric nursing education program.Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA).Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA) required. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Experience working with children, youth, and families is required. Minimum one-year recent inpatient psychiatry experience required. Physically able to lift up to 11 kg, climb three flights of stairs, participate in recreational/gym activities, and safely escort children to a seclusion room, or participate in physical interventions when required. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with children and youth experiencing significant mental health and behavioural challenges including psychiatric dysregulation, anger, anxiety, and crisis behaviours.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) preferred; equivalent community nursing experience will be considered. Current Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) certification and demonstrated proficiency in de-escalation techniques preferred. Experience with nasogastric feeding tube insertion and maintenance, PICC line maintenance, and pediatric/adolescent mental health nursing preferred. Minimum two years of current pediatric/adolescent mental health nursing experience preferred.
