Job summary

Kumaran Systems is hiring a senior backend engineer in Toronto to design, develop, and operate backend services in Python. You will build REST APIs, manage Linux-based deployments, and drive automation with scripting and CI/CD practices.

Ideal candidates have extensive Python experience, Oracle DB know-how, and a track record of end-to-end service ownership in modern cloud environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop backend services and automation tooling in Python 3.x.
• Build and consume RESTful APIs using FastAPI / Flask / Django.
• Operate services on Linux (RHEL / Ubuntu / CentOS); manage users, groups, sudoers and file permissions.
• Write robust Bash / shell scripts for deployment, scheduling (cron / systemd timers) and housekeeping.
• Package, deploy and monitor services using systemd units, journald and standard Linux tooling.
• Diagnose production issues using strace, lsof, top, iotop, ss, tcpdump and log analysis.
• Collaborate with DevOps on CI/CD, container builds and server hardening.

Must-Have Skills

• 7+ years of production Python development (3.9+).
• Strong Linux administration: file system, processes, networking, systemd.
• Deep understanding of sudo and /etc/sudoers — privilege delegation, NOPASSWD rules, security implications.
• Proficient in Bash scripting, cron, logrotate and SSH-based automation.
• REST API frameworks: FastAPI, Flask or Django REST Framework.
• Oracle database experience — PL/SQL, stored procedures, query tuning; cx_Oracle / oracledb driver and SQLAlchemy ORM.
• Virtual environments, pip / poetry, packaging and dependency hygiene.
• Git-based workflows and code-review discipline.

Good-to-Have Skills

• Containerization — Docker, Docker Compose, basic Kubernetes.
• Configuration management (Ansible) or IaC (Terraform).
• Message brokers — RabbitMQ, Kafka, Redis Streams.
• Observability stack — Prometheus, Grafana, ELK.
• Async Python (asyncio, aiohttp) and concurrency tuning.
• Cloud exposure — AWS or Azure for compute, storage and secrets.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's/Master's in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent.
• Comfortable owning services end-to-end — from code to production support.
• Strong problem-solving on Linux and clear technical communication.
