Job summary

Medavie Health Services seeks Communication Officers for its Charlottetown base. The role provides 911 dispatch with EMS guidance, daily reporting, and coordination of Island EMS resources. The program includes 10-week paid training and certification support.

Applicants should be fluent in English, capable of high-stress multitasking, and possess strong computer and communication skills. A casual/part-time schedule, uniform, and 24-hour service are involved.

Qualifications

  • Asset: Work experience in emergency/dispatched communications preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Answering and handling 911 calls with EMS dispatch protocols.
  • Delivering emergency service dispatching and exceptional customer service.
  • Monitor and coordinate Island EMS resources and ambulance transfers.
  • Maintain daily reporting and handle shift handoffs and escalations.
  • Collaborate with Shift Captains and Teams; information sharing.

About MEDACOM Atlantic:

We are currently seeking Communication Officers for our Charlottetown base. Medacom Atlantic is a subsidiary of Medavie Health Services, and operates as Prince Edward Island’s Primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP); answering all 911 calls for the province. Medacom Atlantic provides emergency and non-emergency dispatch service for Island EMS (ground ambulance) and 34 volunteer fire departments across the Island. We operate fast-paced communications, community support services, and 911 emergency medical care on Prince Edward Island.

Medacom Atlantic provides a 10-week paid training program that instills confidence, high-skilled communication techniques, and proper procedure for every emergency situation. If you are successful throughout our recruitment process, you must be capable of achieving your Emergency Medical Dispatching license with Priority Dispatch.

  • As Medacom Atlantic is a 24hr emergency service, the successful applicant must be available to work days, evenings, nights and weekends, and holidays
  • Must be able to work 10–12 hour shifts

Requirements:
  • Highschool Diploma (or equivalent)
  • Additional education in Communications is an asset
  • Work experience in a similar environment is an asset. For example:
    • Emergency medical training or work experience
    • Medical support/administration
    • Technology
    • Communications and/or Customer Service
  • Excellent English language
  • Excellent computer proficiency
  • Successful candidates must provide the following, issued within the last 60 days, before starting the EMD course.
    • Valid CPR Level C certification
    • Criminal Record Check
    • Standard Employment Hearing Assessment
  • Successfully complete aptitude test (Criti-call)
  • Successfully complete internal training (10 weeks) including:
    • Orientation
    • Emergency Medical Dispatcher Certification (EMD) course provided by the employer. Employees are responsible for maintaining certification every 2 years_._
    • Classroom & OJT program
    • English Language Testing
  • Bilingualism is an asset
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
  • Reports directly to the Operations Manager
  • Answering and handling 911 calls (as per Standard Operating Procedures). This includes the provision of Emergency Medical Dispatch instructions for emergency situations such as CPR, childbirth, choking, bleeding control, etc. and more (through use of Medical Priority Dispatch System)
  • Delivering emergency service dispatching
  • Delivering high-quality customer service for all customers/patients
  • Monitoring and coordinating the movement of Island EMS resources
  • Booking and coordinating non-emergency ambulance transfers
  • Maintain daily reporting
  • Managing handoffs, off-load delays, out of province coordination, emergency department back logs, and shift over-runs
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with the internal Shift Captains & Teams
  • Report on internal and external service inquiries (through reporting)
