Job summary

Medavie Health Services West in Saskatchewan is seeking an Emergency Medical Dispatcher to support emergency and administrative calls. The role requires handling calls, dispatching units, and maintaining accurate records, with adherence to safety standards.

Qualifications

  • EMD certificate required for dispatcher duties.
  • CPR/AED certification is required or asset.
  • Criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Grade 12 completion or equivalent is required.
  • Typing speed of at least 35 WPM is expected.
  • APCO Tele-communicator certification is an asset.
  • WHMIS knowledge is an asset; Medical Terminology is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Answer telephone calls promptly and courteously (emergent and admin).
  • Receive and process emergency medical calls per NAED protocol and provide pre-arrival instructions when appropriate.
  • Dispatch ambulances, first responders, or other resources as needed.
  • Notify external agencies and update status as required.
  • Maintain accurate records for delivery of emergency services and other duties.
  • Monitor CAD status screens to determine unit availability and respond accordingly.
  • Provide updates to responders via MDT and radio transmissions; ensure crew safety.
  • Maintain calm, articulate, and concise communication during calls and broadcasts.

This is a permanent part-time position. To support successful onboarding and training, external candidates may be offered a temporary full-time schedule for up to one year. Details regarding this option will be discussed during the interview process.

The position entails, but is not limited to the following:

  • Answers telephone calls (emergent and administrative) promptly and courteously.
  • Receive and process emergency medical calls according to NAED protocol, providing pre-arrival instructions when appropriate.
  • Mandatory adherence to Medical Priority compliance standards.
  • Dispatch ambulances, first responder groups, or other personnel and equipment as needed to handle all requests for assistance.
  • Notify and update external agencies as appropriate.
  • Maintain accuracy in the recording of information related to the delivery of emergency services or other services required of the MCCC.
  • Monitor the status of all units displayed on the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) status screens to determine their availability to respond to calls for service.
  • Keep responders informed, as information is available, by way of Mobile Data Terminal (MDT), updates and radio transmissions.
  • Ongoing status checks to ensure crew safety.
  • Promptly acknowledge all radio messages and take appropriate action.
  • Display a calm, articulate, polite and concise manner when call taking or broadcasting.

Requirements:

  • Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certificate.
  • Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillator, (AED.)
  • Current criminal record check with vulnerable sector check.
  • Must have completed Grade 12 (or equivalent).
  • Must have a minimum typing speed of 35 WPM.
  • APCO Basic Tele-communicator certificate is an asset.
  • Medical Terminology course is an asset.
  • WHMIS Course - Workplace Hazard Material Information Systems is an asset.
