Job summary

Lakeside Process Controls Ltd. in Winnipeg, Canada, is seeking a Senior Project Engineer, Automation, to lead technical execution across complex automation projects.

You will collaborate with customers and internal teams, mentor engineers, and ensure high-quality delivery from scope definition through FAT and commissioning. The role requires a degree in Engineering (or technologist diploma), 10+ years of project engineering experience, and strong expertise in industrial automation, process

Qualifications

  • University degree in Engineering or Technologist diploma in an Engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in a Project Engineering or related role.
  • Strong technical expertise in industrial automation, process control, and engineering design.
  • Experience across multiple process industries (Chemical, Refining, Power, Pharma, Food & Beverage).
  • Proven ability to lead complex technical work and drive outcomes; strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Define design specifications and project standards in collaboration with customers and engineering teams.
  • Interpret customer requirements and represent their needs throughout project execution and solution delivery.
  • Lead and coordinate technical activities across complex projects and specialized areas (e.g., Batch, SIS, Simulation).
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and task direction to Project Engineers; assign work and support development.
  • Develop and implement engineering solutions aligned with industry standards and customer expectations.
  • Review, validate, and approve engineering designs, submittals, service estimates, and peer work prior to customer submission.
  • Perform quality control of engineering deliverables and ensure adherence to processes and standards.
  • Lead or support project phases including scope definition, pre-FEED/FEED, testing, commissioning, and start-up.
  • Own and lead FAT, system testing and commissioning activities.
  • Monitor project execution to ensure scope, quality, schedule, and customer expectations are met.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers and cross-functional teams to support planning and issue resolution.
  • Organize and direct small technical teams within a defined area of expertise.
  • Execute complex technical activities and provide SME in a specialized area.
  • Support budget management by reviewing costs, risks, and change orders.
  • Contribute to engineering process improvements and standard development.
  • Collaborate with Sales to support hardware and services estimation for larger pursuits.
  • Maintain strong communication with customers and internal stakeholders.

What you will be doing in the role of Project Engineer, Automation:

As a Senior Project Engineer, you will bring advanced technical expertise and independent judgment to complex engineering challenges. You will lead technical execution within your area of specialization, while mentoring team members and ensuring high-quality project delivery. Working closely with customers and internal teams, you will be responsible for delivering practical, efficient, and technically sound solutions across a variety of projects.

Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Define design specifications and project standards in collaboration with customers and engineering teams
  • Interpret customer requirements and represent their needs throughout project execution and solution delivery
  • Lead and coordinate technical activities across complex projects and specialized areas (e.g., Batch, SIS, Simulation)
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and task direction to Project Engineers, including assigning work and supporting development
  • Develop and implement engineering solutions aligned with industry standards, internal best practices, and customer expectations
  • Review, validate, and approve engineering designs, submittals, service estimates, and peer work prior to customer submission
  • Perform overall quality control of engineering deliverables and ensure adherence to established processes and standards
  • Lead or support key project phases, including scope definition, pre-FEED/FEED activities, testing, commissioning, and start-up
  • Own and lead internal and external Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), as well as system testing and commissioning activities
  • Monitor project execution to ensure scope, quality, schedule, and customer expectations are consistently met
  • Collaborate closely with Project Managers and cross-functional teams to support planning, execution strategies, and issue resolution
  • Organize and direct small technical teams within a defined area of expertise or project scope
  • Execute complex technical activities and provide subject matter expertise in a specialized area
  • Support budget management for assigned scopes, including reviewing costs, identifying risks, and recommending change orders
  • Contribute to engineering process improvements, including development and enhancement of procedures and standards
  • Collaborate with Sales to support hardware and services estimation for larger pursuits
  • Maintain strong communication with customers and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle to ensure successful delivery
Knowledge and skills required for the role:
  • University degree in Engineering or Technologist diploma in an Engineering discipline
  • 10+ years of experience in a Project Engineering or related role
  • Strong technical expertise in industrial automation, process control, and engineering design
  • Experience working with a variety of process industries (e.g., Chemical, Refining, Power, Pharma, Food & Beverage)
  • Proven ability to lead complex technical work and independently drive project outcomes
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
