Job summary

Lakeside Process Controls Ltd. in Mississauga, Ontario, seeks a Senior Process Mechanical Engineer to lead hydrogen system design across production, electrolysis, compression, storage, refueling, venting, and distribution.

You will develop PFDs, P&IDs, and process narratives, and define operating philosophies for safe, efficient operations. The role requires 10+ years in process engineering with hydrogen or related industries, strong safety and risk-management expertise, and the ability to lead

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience in process engineering, industrial gas systems, chemical processing, fuel systems, hydrogen systems, or related industries.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and reviewing process safety management and risk assessment.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering projects from concept through commissioning.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and customer-facing skills.
  • Direct experience applying Canadian hydrogen and industrial piping regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the process design of hydrogen production, electrolysis, compression, storage, refueling, venting, and distribution systems (PFDs, P&IDs, Process Descriptions, Operating Philosophies).
  • Develop and review logic diagrams, shutdown philosophies, safety requirements specifications, and functional descriptions.
  • Establish startup, shutdown, purge, venting, and abnormal operating strategies for hydrogen systems.
  • Define process control strategies and work with controls teams to implement them.
  • Participate in commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, and performance validation.
  • Act as technical lead for hydrogen-specific regulatory compliance and interface with authorities, customers, consultants, and vendors.
  • Mentor junior engineers and share engineering standards for hydrogen system design.

What you will be doing in the role of Process Mechanical Engineer, Senior:


  • Lead the process design of hydrogen production, electrolysis, compression, storage, refueling, venting, and distribution systems.

    • Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)

  • Develop and review:

  • Establish startup, shutdown, purge, venting, and abnormal operating strategies for hydrogen systems.

  • Define process control strategies and work closely with controls and automation teams to implement them.

  • Participate in commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, and performance validation activities.


Process Safety & Risk Management


  • Participate in HAZOP, LOPA, and other process hazard reviews.

  • Develop and review safety shutdown strategies and risk mitigation measures.

  • Ensure hydrogen systems are designed in accordance with recognized process safety principles and industry best practices.


Regulatory Compliance & Engineering Governance


  • Serve as the technical lead for hydrogen-specific code and regulatory compliance.

  • Develop compliance strategies and support regulatory approvals, submissions, and variance requests.

  • Interface directly with regulatory authorities, customers, consultants, and equipment vendors.

  • Applicable CSA, NFPA, and pressure equipment standards

  • Maintain awareness of emerging hydrogen regulations, standards, and industry practices.


Customer & Technical Leadership


  • Act as a trusted technical advisor to customers throughout project development and execution.

  • Support business development activities through technical consultation, proposal reviews, and customer presentations.

  • Collaborate with equipment vendors and technology providers to evaluate hydrogen solutions.

  • Review and approve engineering deliverables prepared by other engineers.

  • Mentor and support the development of junior and intermediate engineers.

  • Share knowledge and establish engineering standards for hydrogen system design.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering quality, design tools, and project execution.


Knowledge and skills required for the role:


  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • 10+ years of experience in process engineering, industrial gas systems, chemical processing, fuel systems, hydrogen systems, or related industries.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and reviewing:

  • Strong understanding of process safety management principles and risk assessment methodologies.

  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering projects from concept through commissioning.

  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and customer-facing skills.

  • Candidates must demonstrate direct experience applying Canadian hydrogen and industrial piping regulations, including those outlined above. Experience applying these requirements to hydrogen production, compression, storage, fueling, venting, or industrial gas systems is considered essential for this role.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience with hydrogen electrolysis systems.

  • Experience with hydrogen compression, storage, dispensing, or refueling systems.

  • Experience performing or facilitating HAZOP and LOPA studies.

  • Familiarity with SIL assessments and functional safety principles.

  • Experience supporting startup and commissioning of industrial process systems.
